Beloved trans author, actress and activist Cecilia Gentili has passed away. Gentili was a prominent figure in the trans community in New York City. She starred as Miss Orlando in the groundbreaking series “POSE,” performed her autobiographical show “Red Ink” Off-Broadway last year, and her memoir “Letters to Everyone in My Hometown Who Isn’t My Rapist” came out in 2022. We spoke with her that year about the book, a powerful depiction of abuse, sex work, forgiveness, friendship and class mobility. You can read that interview at the link in our bio.

On Feb. 5, 1981, Toronto police raided bathhouses in the city’s gay village and arrested more than 300 men. At the time, it was the largest mass arrest in Toronto’s history, but the raids were just another in a long line of police operations targeting LGBTQ2S+ people and institutions in Canada.

Thousands of people rallied in Toronto the night after the raids, demanding an end to police harassment and that the charges against the men be dropped.

Alberta premier Danielle Smith just introduced a set of new policies restricting gender-affirming care, pronoun use in schools, and trans womens’ participation in sports in what is probably Canada’a harshest anti-trans legislation to date.

The policy follows similar moves in Saskatchewan and New Brunswick, but takes it to a new extreme. And we should be very worried.
