“You don’t have enough life in your home”

This specific sky was inspired by a sunset that I saw while on a rooftop in Germany a few years back. I just couldn’t believe that the sky looked exactly as it did when I was living in Akron, Ohio. Still blue. Still vast. Still larger than me. 💙

-But for real, it’s been a crazyweek. I cannot tell yall what’s wrong because I don’t even know. One day I am just fine and the next I can barely walk and need a walker to even stand. Posting because everything that is wrong with my body has its roots in my time in service in the military. I was just a young girl with no money, with a high ASVAB score, prior athlete, college credits, and an admin role.

Howwww did I get here?! My first month in the Navy I was picked up for a combat billet with the Seabees and was stuck in that billet for the rest of my career. I sometimes still did admin but was mostly needs of the Navy- doing any and everything especially as I made rank. 6 gas chambers, OC spray, umpteen fitness tests, all types of tactical trainings, special weapons trainings, 1 2-year deployment (bc of covid), MST, lots of physical and mental trauma,burn pits, vehicle accidents, falls, fires, water training, sea missions, and 1 medical retirement later here I am: Fit, muscular, and seemingly healthy. And yet, I had to re-learn how to walk this week.

-Chronic pain is my norm and so is PTSD, anxiety and depression. This is not how you should live at 32. Please please consider what you are signing up for when you join the military; it is truly a gamble, no matter how you play the game. I am doing much better today, and walking upright. Feeling good! Some people aren’t as lucky. 🫶🏾

✨ If you like artwork: my work is a study of the journey of young veterans after military service. Fighting PTSD, depression, anxiety, and whatever they sacrificed. I use botanicals and natural elements to breathe LIFE into them. @workofsolomon

Designing three canvases at once felt more like a numbers game than an intentional use of materials.

I love to compare my artwork to my garden because similar to plants, if you trim off the things that you don’t need then the rest of the plant will begin to flourish.

I have tried SO hard to be a traditional painter.

🎨During my undergraduate studies, I felt pressured to fit into the box and themes of historic art masters.

-I exchanged acrylic paint for traditional oils

- I thought that I needed hand stretched and primed canvases

-Every painting had to be super technical, intentional and planned

I WAS SO BOREDDDD!!

In my senior year I decided to buck against the grain and create based on JUST vibes. I paid more attention to what felt good to me.

Come to find out….I love everything and I have a strong urge to incorporate life and texture to my work.
