Ballroom is not just a scene or a trend.
It was created by Black and Latina trans women as a response to exclusion, as a way to build community, safety, and expression where none was given.
It’s important to say this clearly, especially as more people engage with it.
To be in this space also means to understand where it comes from, and to move with respect.
This week, with Trans Visibility, and in a moment where trans lives are still being questioned and politicized, it matters even more.
Ballroom has always been more than performance.
It’s community, it’s resistance, it’s survival, and celebration at the same time.
We keep building, but we don’t forget who built this first.

Lisbon Edition
In 2010 the Vogue Nights was created in NYC by Icon Jack Mizrahi (@jackmizrahi) as resistance. When nightlife stopped playing house and vogue music. It became a weekly safe space for voguers and ballroom patrons to own their craft, celebrate their culture, and have a good time!
With their blessing, we’re bringing a special edition to Lisbon.

Feeling so proud of myself. My whole life I have been looking for a place to belong, never had that with my family. I’ve had tried the church which was really good and I’ve learned a LOT, but coming from a marginalized reality on the country side of Brazil I wasn’t really been myself, in fact I didn’t knew who I was. In 2018 I decided to change that, moved to Portugal without knowing nothing and no one, and GIRL…that was the best thing I ever did! it’s been a JOURNEY of self knowledge. I’vefound myself, I’ve found people like me that I love and they love me back, I found Ballroom a place where I can really be who I meant to be. BLACK, QUEER, ARTIST, CRAZY 😜.
