Working at Epsilon Spireshas been one of the first times in my professional life where my stranger ideas about sound haven’t just been tolerated, but actively encouraged.

I’ve had the chance to help build octophonic concerts in the sanctuary, experimenting with how sound moves through the balconies and architecture instead of just coming from a stage. I’ve also been developing ideas for a small FM radio/headphone system for film screenings that could dramatically improve dialogue clarity in the balcony while also creating a strange, beautiful “drive-in theater inside a cathedral” feeling.

I’d love to help create a permanent quadraphonic sound system at the space so spatial audio concerts and installations could happen more regularly instead of only as special events assembled from scratch.

There are also ideas for dedicated listening-room environments, and projects like Weather Warlock — a weather-driven synthesizer installation that changes with real atmospheric conditions, which I’d love to make publicly accessible online as a permanent stream or installation.

One of my favorite ideas has been finding ways to treat the building itself as an instrument — including potentially routing the sanctuary’s enormous natural reverberation into smaller performance spaces as a live effects send so musicians could literally play the acoustics of the cathedral in real time.

A lot of these ideas are creatively possible already — what limits them is mostly time, equipment, and resources.

That’s why the membership drive matters to me. Supporting Epsilon Spires means supporting a space where ambitious and genuinely strange ideas are allowed to happen.

Ichabod and Shmeagol were put to rest together tonight.

We got them as kittens in 2011, and they brought so much joy into our lives.

They were indoor and outdoor cats in Oakland, on Linden Street—little rooftop kitties, sitting on the trellis watching people go into Shangri-La, running across the roof, hanging out on the patio with me and Diane. Later, on 55th Street, they had a beautiful garden and loved being out there in the dirt and the sun. They were always around us, always part of everything.

Ichabod was like my brother and my son and my friend and my kitty all in one. When he was young he could jump so high. He was the sweetest, most gentle cat—always down for belly rubs, always stretched out on his back. He loved to spoon, and whenever we were in bed he’d lie right between us.

Shmeagol was a feisty little lady with a big appetite for human food. She’d complain and bite your elbow if you didn’t play with her when she wanted. She preferred climbing over jumping—pulling herself up onto drapes and anything hanging with just her front paws.

We gave them an incredible life, and they gave so much back to us.

They passed in Minneapolis today. Diane brought them to the vet one last time. Their health declined in a way that made this the right decision at the same time.

I had been trying to get them out here to Massachusetts and didn’t fully understand how much things had changed since I last saw them. It came as a shock. I wish I could’ve been there for them, for Dianne, and for myself.

Thank you to everyone who helped when Ichabod was diagnosed in 2023. Because of that support, he lived much longer than we expected.

I’m glad they’re both finally at peace.

We got them as kittens in 2011, and they brought so much joy into our lives.

Got the 8-channel system up and running and starting to dial it in.

Ran some of my own sounds through it just to test movement and placement — this is at half volume (1am test!)

Really excited to hear what Lea Bertucci and Olivia Block do with this on Friday.

If you’re anywhere nearby, you should come experience this one in person.

Two remarkable film events at Epsilon Spires this weekend!

Friday the 10th:
THE FLYING ACE w/ live Pipe Organ Score by Jeff Rapsis!

Re-scheduled from a February weather event, this is the 100th Anniversary of THE FLYING ACE with a dynamic live soundtrack performed on our Estey organ! A rare surviving example of silent films produced early in the 20th century intended for Black audiences in segregated cinemas, featuring an All-Black cast.

https://www.epsilonspires.org/event-info/the-flying-ace-w-pipe-organ-score-by-jeff-rapsis

Sunday the 12th:
Pasolini's The Gospel According to St. Matthew (1964)

Celebrate this Easter Season with a Biblical epic that only the Marxist dissident Pier Paolo Pasolini could make. Celebrated by both art-house audiences and the Vatican, this intensely faithful adaptation cuts past dogma and ventures straight to the core of Jesus’s radical humanism.

Tonight! From Oakland, Voicehandler, a.k.a. my friends Jacob Felix Heule and Danishta Rivero -voice, drum, and electronics in a savory improvised framework.
Even more friends, Andy and Mia, presenting their long running Hollow deck project, which I like to describe as “concrete folk” (like music concrete and folk music if you don’t get it initially)
Kurt and I played as deflator mouse from 2001 to 2006 and, while we played ooze fest this last week, we are looking forward to having a little more time and space to get into the zone and present our newest works for midi bass and free jazz drum machine. ACID PSYCHOJAZZ.
So pleased that we could have this at Looky Here! Their calendar is chock full of great things, literally incl some chalky things, I’m hoping for a full house so we can support them as much as they’re supporting us and the touring musicians.

Avent pro musica is my fledgling umbrella entity for avant-garde performances in the valley and beyond. More on that in a bit, follow the account for more information as it develops…

Coming up on Sunday, afternoon show, between 3 PM and 6 PM at feeding tube Records.
Jacob and Danishta are coming from Oakland, and if you don’t catch them in Greenfield, at Looky Here on Saturday night, here’s another chance. Dreamt Dreameris new to me, but comes highly recommended. Looking forward to this whole afternoon.

Regulars at feeding tube Sunday shows will expect music to start at four, but we are having it a bit earlier in order to give people a chance to get out to the brick house to see Wendy eisenberg, gloyd, and shane kerr.

So, you know that “daily practice“ that I was doing? Well, I fell off in February, when I tried to make it all fields recording based, but then… It was cold, and windy, and I did not get out very much for field recordings!
Anyways, I’m getting back to it and if you visit raubroy.bandcamp.com
You may notice some 5 x 5 and 5 x 7 prints of some of the collages I did in January. If this was a part of it that you enjoyed, you can now grip these right to your zone

Sitting in with Mickey O’Hara at WCUW radio in Worcester Massachusetts tonight, nine to midnight EST
We’ll play something live but I haven’t thought about it, I have a new night job, and actually have to go back to sleep now lol, we’ll see how it goes!
https://wcuw.org/listen/

Collage is from my February field recording series, which got off to an OK start and then I didn’t go outside much, unfortunately. Will be getting back to my daily practice in March, is the plan.

Fuck Trump and Ice, thanks.

Other than that, I’ve been making music every day and doing quick collages on my phone to go with it.

At the end of the month I pulled some of it together into a handmade mixtape.

Everything’s up on Bandcamp.
