Growing up every household had one in the fridge. No one asked if you liked pickles. They simply appeared on the table; beside potatoes, bread, smoked fish. Always there.

Smoked mackerel was a common sight in our household growing up, more everyday fare than a luxury, often perfectly paired with a cold beer.
Last week, I finally started a personal project that’s been floating in my mind for a while: Babcia's House - “Babcia” means grandma in Polish.
I grew up in a very unusual setting: a Polish household in Lithuania, which had spent over 50 years under Soviet occupation. Our home was a mix of traditions and flavours: Polish Catholic customs at the core, Lithuanian dishes that mirrored Polish staples, and a lingering Russian influence everywhere. Russian TV shows were still common, and the language is still widely spoken by the older generation, which is why I can speak it today.
Growing up in that mix, then moving to England 18 years ago, I often felt caught between worlds, never quite Polish, never quite Lithuanian. My passport says one thing, my mother tongue another, and my childhood traditions yet another. But over time, I’ve learned to stop choosing. I am all of it, messy, layered, and entirely mine.
