Il 𝐺𝑖𝑢𝑑𝑖𝑧𝑖𝑜 𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑎𝑙𝑒 di Michelangelo è tornato visibile, in tutta la sua sorprendente potenza e nello splendore delle sue originali cromie, rivelate dalla manutenzione straordinaria appena conclusa.

Iniziata il 1° febbraio scorso, con l’allestimento del ponteggio in Cappella Sistina, la manutenzione straordinaria ha visto la rimozione di una diffusa velatura biancastra sulla superficie pittorica che offuscava le cangianti tonalità michelangiolesche.

L’intervento di manutenzione straordinaria è sostenuto dal Capitolo della Florida dei Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums.

👷‍♂️🎨 𝐄𝐱𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝑳𝒂𝒔𝒕 𝑱𝒖𝒅𝒈𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕.

Michelangelo’s 𝐿𝑎𝑠𝑡 𝐽𝑢𝑑𝑔𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 is visible once again, in all its astonishing power and in the brightness of its original colors, brought to light by the extraordinary maintenance, recently completed.

The maintenance, which started on 1 February with the installation of the scaffolding in the Sistine Chapel involved the removal of a widespread whitish patina from the painted surface which dulled the subtle modulations of Michelangelo’s palette.

The extraordinary maintenance is supported by the Florida Chapter of the Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums.

📸 𝐋𝐚 𝐅𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐚 𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐚

La Fototeca dei Musei Vaticani ha recentemente acquisito un piccolo, prezioso nucleo di stampe fotografiche acquerellate a mano di Domenico Anderson (1854-1938), dono di un erede del fotografo, noto per le sue celebri campagne sugli affreschi di Michelangelo in Cappella Sistina e Paolina (1933-1934) e precursore della fotografia a colori già a fine ‘800.

Il 𝑅𝑖𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑡𝑜 𝑑𝑖 𝑑𝑎𝑚𝑎 fu acquistato da Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli probabilmente fra il 1872 e il 1875. Le antiche attribuzioni dell’opera si riferivano a Donato Bramante e a Piero della Francesca, a cui Anderson l’ascrive, o ancora a Domenico Veneziano; oggi la critica la inserisce unanimemente tra una serie di ritratti femminili eseguiti nella seconda metà del ‘400 dalla bottega fiorentina dei fratelli Antonio e Piero del Pollaiolo.

📸 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐡𝐨𝐭𝐨 𝐋𝐢𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐫𝐲

The Photo Library of the Vatican Museums has recently acquired a small yet precious group of photographic prints hand-coloured in watercolour by Domenico Anderson, donated by one of the photographer’s heirs. Anderson is renowned for his celebrated photographic campaigns of the Sistine and Pauline Chapel frescoes by Michelangelo (1933–1934). The photographer is also regarded as a pioneer of colour photography as early as the late nineteenth century.

𝑅𝑖𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑡𝑜 𝑑𝑖 𝑑𝑎𝑚𝑎 was probably acquired by Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli between 1872 and 1875. The painting was formerly attributed to Donato Bramante, Piero della Francesca—the attribution endorsed by Anderson—and, alternatively, to Domenico Veneziano. Today, however, it is unanimously recognised by scholars as belonging to a group of female portraits produced in the second half of the fifteenth century within the Florentine workshop of the brothers Antonio and Piero del Pollaiolo.

✨ La Vergine, avvolta da un prezioso manto blu trapunto di stelle, tiene in braccio il Bambino Gesù che con una mano afferra la veste della Madre e con l’altra, in segno benedicente, si rivolge a un gruppo di figure genuflesse su un terreno roccioso, con indosso una cappa bianca.

Questo elemento li contraddistingue come i Battuti Bianchi di Santa Maria Novella, penitenti appartenuti ad una Confraternita laica istituita nel 1343 che aveva sede in un oratorio di Ferrara.

Per la loro devozione e, forse, come stendardo processionale, furono proprio i Confratelli a commissionare la tavola al celebre artista emiliano, Vitale degli Equi da Bologna. Si tratta di una delle poche opere firmate del pittore che la realizzò tra il 1345 e il 1350, lasciando memoria di sé nel cartiglio «VITALIS DE BONONIA F[ECIT]».

✨The Virgin, enveloped in a precious blue mantle adorned with stars, holds Child Jesus in her arms. He grasps his Mother’s garment with one hand and, with the other raised in a gesture of blessing, turns toward a group of kneeling figures standing on rocky ground and dressed in white cloaks.

This distinctive garment identifies them as the Battuti Bianchi of Santa Maria Novella, penitents belonging to a lay Confraternity founded in 1343 and based in an oratory in Ferrara.

In view of their devotion and possibly for use as a processional banner, the Confraternity commissioned the panel from the renowned painter from Emilia, Vitale degli Equi da Bologna. It is one of the artist’s few signed works, created between 1345 and 1350, where he left his name in the cartouche: “VITALIS DE BONONIA F[ECIT]”.

🐾 Alla scoperta dello Zoo di Pietra nella #SalaDegliAnimali

🐐 Oggi ci focalizziamo su una piccola scultura, 𝐺𝑟𝑢𝑝𝑝𝑜 𝑑𝑖 𝑢𝑛𝑎 𝑐𝑎𝑝𝑟𝑒𝑡𝑡𝑎 𝑐𝑜𝑛 𝑠𝑒𝑟𝑝𝑒 𝑐ℎ𝑒 𝑙𝑎 𝑚𝑜𝑟𝑑𝑒, appartenuta allo scultore Francesco Antonio Franzoni e da lui venduta a Pio VI tra il 1790 e il 1791.

È composta da più elementi marmorei assemblati e rimodellati da Franzoni - forse partendo da un torso antico - che ci restituiscono un episodio di vita agreste assai curioso: un serpente aggredisce una capretta accucciata, mordendole la barba. La sua espressione, allo stesso tempo sorpresa e spaventata, è brillantemente resa dallo scultore.

Forse a ispirare la scena è intervenuta l’antica tradizione agreste della presunta immunità o risposta immunitaria al veleno dei serpenti presente nel sangue dei caprini e degli ovini; in questo caso si potrebbe pensare a una più rasserenante rappresentazione bucolica, con finalità didattiche.

🐐 Today we focus on a small sculpture, 𝐺𝑟𝑢𝑝𝑝𝑜 𝑑𝑖 𝑢𝑛𝑎 𝑐𝑎𝑝𝑟𝑒𝑡𝑡𝑎 𝑐𝑜𝑛 𝑠𝑒𝑟𝑝𝑒 𝑐ℎ𝑒 𝑙𝑎 𝑚𝑜𝑟𝑑𝑒, formerly owned by the sculptor Francesco Antonio Franzoni and sold to Pius VI between 1790 and 1791.

The work is composed of several marble elements, assembled and reworked by Franzoni - possibly from an ancient bust - which represent a rather curious scene of rural life: a snake attacks a crouching goat, biting its beard. The animal’s expression, at once surprised and frightened, is rendered with remarkable skill by the sculptor.

The scene may have been inspired by an ancient rural belief in the supposed immunity, or immune response, of goats and sheep’s blood to snake venom. From this perspective, the sculpture may be viewed as a peaceful bucolic representation, perhaps intended for educational purposes.
