How do we act as cultural producers when our culture is producing mass murder?
I worked on this show for almost two years. In the final days of finishing the work, the US and Israel joined forces to bomb Iran.
The familiar, frenzied state of a deadline blurred into the anxiety of our world racing towards total war.
I couldn’t sleep, and under the weight of the moment, the thought of being an Artist felt rarefied - maybe impossible. I mourned our future where society might be a memory, where we experience the terror that our government afflicts on others. In these acts, we destroy ourselves.
What does it mean to be an Artist? Did I ever fulfill that role? What will this life be without it - without safety? What else will the end of this empire bring? When the fire it burns to extend its reign hits the limit and ricochets, collapsing back on its center.
After a week of virtually no sleep, I began to see this as my last show. And if it were, how will it answer these questions?
It was in this state of mind that I erased the paintings. I then wrote a long email to Olivia Barrett, the principal of the gallery, explaining what I had done and why, and then slept for the first time what felt like a month.
She gracefully received the erasure as a work of Art. This embrace -enthusiastically pivoting to show 40 erased paintings, putting the full force of the gallery behind it to broadcast this gesture - is radical.
Psychic Death opened April 25 and runs until May 23, 2026

This was the first work of mine that a museum acquired 💙 I should’ve shared the news when it happened… back in 2020 - Opps!
The couple here is my maternal grandparents on their wedding night. They’re surrounded by bubbles, faces, eyes and hands. Under them is a swan who touches its reflection.
The painting can also be turned and hung counter-clockwise to show the swan floating in a lake with mountains in the background, here its reflection is a fish in the water. Both views have the same table from the wedding in the foreground.
I painted it in Brooklyn in 2014 and included it in my first solo show at @tanyaleighton in Berlin - you can see the whole show here -#vanhanosnottheway the formative collector and art advisor @ellecny bought it and later donated to @icamiami - where my friend, the prodigal @alexgartenfeld is the Artist Director. I did my first solo show with Alex and @offmoravec back in 2011 at their off-space West Street 💫
So many thanks to these amazing advocates, I am lucky!!

💥🌟Recent Museum Acquisition🌟💥
This painting, titled “A Recent History of the United States” was recently acquired by the Phoenix Art Museum!
It was first shown at Chateau Shatto in 2017 in my solo show titled “Late American Paintings”. You can see the whole show here ➡️ #vanhanoslateamericanpaintings
The composition is based on Emanuel Leutze’s painting “Washington Crossing the Delaware” except here, the ship doubles as a card table which triples as an ashtray.
The players all have two faces including Obama who creates a new profile with his hand.
Behind him is a totem, a Grinch version of Pepe the Frog, a racist meme who is stealing cards. His head is topped with the Kermit the Frog sipping tea meme, which generally translates to - not my problem.
To the right - Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus together form a large crying emoji yellow face.
Next is a smiling Trump balloon head floating over Hillary Clinton whose face is split in half revealing a Reptilian underneath.
To her right sits another reptile, Godzilla - who has taken off his Trump face mask to contest the game. Hillary and Trump both pet a cat whose fur is dyed like the American Flag.
A skinless man with a generic white male mask sits in the foreground and passes and Ace card to a KKK iceburg who is emerging out of the water. #abolishice
This painting a huge! 78x108 in / 198.12x274.32 cm. Craig Jacobson boldly purchased it from the show, took great care for many years and has now secured it in this museum collection 💝
I’m overwhelmed with gratitude for this outcome ♡ Thank you @jacobscr & @liv.barrett.chateau for your great care with this work and for @phxart for adding it to your collection!
It’s wild to revisit today and sad that this painting feels more relevant - 10 years after it was painted ☠️
