With today's announcement of the Queen's death, we remember her first Royal Visit to Toronto. In 1951, HRH Princess Elizabeth and Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, toured Hart House with UofT Chancellor Vincent Massey and President Sidney Earl Smith.

Footage of the tour can be viewed via the link in our bio.

In the mid 1990s, students at the Faculty of Education started the ‘Future Teachers Club’, an initiative “to encourage African/Canadian students in elementary and secondary schools to consider teaching as a career.”
You can learn about the FTC (and much more!) in the Gary Pieters fonds [B1996-0024]. Pieters (👉image 4) was an active participant in the FTC and a number of other Caribbean students’ activities on campus. The memorial wall at the base of Soldiers’ Tower displays the names of members of the UofT who died during the First World War. Today we remember and acknowledge all who have served. Image of the centre tablet from the memorial wall, 1932. [A1965-0004.2A.51] #remembranceday #lestweforget

Follow the link in our bio to check out ‘Changemakers’, an online exhibit curated by Bryna Bernstein, Camilo Mejia, Kes Murray, graduates of the Master of Information and Master of Museum Studies programs at the University of Toronto! Many members of the public and students attending the University of Toronto today are not aware of how much the University has changed in a short amount of time. This online exhibit explores and highlights the role women played on campus from the late 1950s to the early 2000s. For most of this time, women were a minority on campus, many felt they faced barriers that made it an unequal, exclusionary, and discriminatory place. Despite this, women challenged these barriers, achieved success, and made their voices heard.

Over nearly two centuries, the university has had numerous challenges and calls to change. A new online exhibit called “Onwards: The University of Toronto through Times of Change” created by students at the UofT's iSchool examines the university’s history in difficult times in partnership with the University of Toronto Archives. While the current pandemic may seem unprecedented, this is not the first time the university has had to face great challenges. Click the link in the biography to explore the online exhibit curated by Annie McCarron, Carys Owen & Leora Bromberg, graduates of the Master of Information and Master of Museum Studies programs at the University of Toronto.

The UofT remembers the Hon. William G. Davis, who passed away on August 8th. In June 1970, Davis - a UofT graduate (1951) and then Minister of University Affairs - took part in the cornerstone laying ceremony for Robarts Library. Davis would become Ontario’s 18th Premier the following year, serving in that role until 1985.
