Field visit reflections from Ghana.
During a recent UKFT visit to Accra and Kantamanto Market, Mohammed Patel, UKFT's recycling and reuse manager, saw firsthand the realities of the global second-hand clothing trade after more than 17 years working in the UK’s textile collection and sorting sector.
Organised by The Or Foundation (@theorispresent ), the visit highlighted the scale and complexity of Kantamanto, which supports more than 26,700 livelihoods and thousands of businesses focused on resale, repair, tailoring and upcycling.
The experience challenged many common assumptions around “waste exports”. Kantamanto is not a passive system. It is an active market driven by resilience, repair, reuse and entrepreneurship.
Key priorities highlighted during the visit included:
- Stronger export regulation
- Improved traceability and accountability
- Better understanding of reuse market realities
- Fairer distribution of financial risk
- More coordinated policy and collaboration
The visit also reinforced the importance of policy action on EPR in both the UK and EU. Without mechanisms that support the full reverse supply chain, including reuse markets, there is a risk that waste displacement continues under the banner of sustainability.
There is value in these materials. Realising that value depends on coordinated legislation, investment in recycling infrastructure and stronger circular systems globally.
Please note: This was an awareness and intelligence-gathering visit to help inform future policy discussions and potential solutions around global textile reuse and recycling systems. Read more here https://ukft.org/kantamanto-market-may26/
