Last week, UJAMAA Construction’s Founder & CEO, Jimmy A., had the opportunity to speak at the Project Information Session for the John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, Hospital Improvements project; an important initiative focused on enhancing critical healthcare infrastructure in Chicago.

In partnership with Power Construction, this project represents more than building system upgrades; it’s about creating access, opportunity, and pathways for local residents, businesses, and the next generation of skilled professionals.

The session brought together workforce organizations, union trades, community partners, and local businesses to connect, learn, and explore opportunities tied to the project: from apprenticeships, to subcontracting and supplier engagement.

Recently, UJAMAA Construction welcomed students from Community High School District 218’s WOO Program for a day of learning, exposure, and inspiration around careers in construction.

Members of the Pepper–UJAMAA team shared their personal journeys into the industry and highlighted the many pathways available to young people interested in construction and related fields.

One of the highlights of the visit was an hour-long Presidents’ Q&A, where students had the opportunity to ask UJAMAA Construction President Jimmy Akintonde and Pepper Construction President Scott Pepper questions about their career paths, how they entered the construction industry, and the advice they would give to the next generation of leaders.

The students then toured the UJAMAA office and met members of different teams across the company, learning how various roles—from project management to operations and marketing—work together to deliver successful projects.
