What is geography and why should people study it? 🌎

Professor Ilan Kelman (@ucl) explains how geography provides the skills, knowledge and perspective to understand the humanity's place on this planet - and how we can do better.

What happens when satellite pollution starts cooling the planet? 🌍🛰️

New research from Professor Eloise Marais explores how emissions from rocket launches and burning satellites are affecting Earth’s atmosphere, creating what she describes as an “accidental geoengineering experiment”.

Speaking to @npr’s All Things Considered, Eloise explains why soot particles released high in the atmosphere could have unexpected climate impacts as the space industry grows.

From climate ethics to the future of space regulation, the research raises urgent questions about how we use space responsibly.

What happens to sulfur and helium when fossil fuels disappear?

From fertilisers and semiconductors to MRI scanners and batteries, many essential materials are still tied to fossil fuel extraction.

In a new feature from @chemistryworldmagazine, @profmarkmaslin explores how the transition to net zero could trigger shortages of sulfur and helium, and why recycling and circular economy approaches will be critical for the future.

The article also highlights how global conflict and supply chain disruption are exposing the fragility of current systems.

Save this for later and tell us: what hidden climate risks should we be talking about more?

Coal pollution is reducing solar power ☀️⚡

New research published in Nature Sustainability and co-authored by @ucl Geography researcher Dr Feng Yin reveals that pollution from coal plants is actively suppressing solar energy generation worldwide.

Using a new global dataset, the study found that aerosols reduced global solar PV generation by 5.8% in 2023, equivalent to 111 TWh of lost electricity.

The research highlights an overlooked challenge in the clean energy transition: expanding solar power alone may not deliver expected climate benefits if fossil fuel pollution continues to block sunlight from reaching solar panels.

Teach data. Shape geography.

We’re hiring!

The @ucl Department of Geography is seeking an Associate Lecturer (Teaching) in Social Data Science and Cartography.

This is an opportunity to help shape how students understand the world through spatial data, GIS, and data visualisation, from undergraduate teaching through to graduate-level support.

We’re looking for someone who brings confidence in quantitative geography, spatial statistics, and geospatial analysis, alongside a commitment to inclusive, engaging teaching.

At UCL Geography, teaching connects directly to research that is world-leading, interdisciplinary, and globally engaged, from climate and cities to data, justice, and environmental change.

If you’re excited by helping students turn data into insight, this could be your next step.

Why study climate and human history together?

Climate, environment, and human history are deeply connected.

This annual lecture series at @ucl Geography explores how environmental change has shaped human societies, and how humans, in turn, have shaped the planet.

From ancient population shifts to modern climate challenges, understanding the deep past helps us interpret the present more clearly.

This year’s lecture brings cutting-edge genetic evidence into that conversation.

Running, reflection, and a view over London 🌿🏃‍♀️

As part of the 2026 @ucl Green Impact Scheme, GI Geog joined the Department’s running club, Geoggers, for a lunchtime run exploring the role of movement, nature and community in supporting student wellbeing.

From the top of Primrose Hill, students reflected on how being active outdoors can help balance the demands of university life, bringing together health, connection and perspective in one shared experience.
