Congratulations to first-year medical student and @ucalgarydinos @ucalgaryknes alumnus Ameen Alizada, BSc’25! Ameen has been named an Alberta Top 30 Under 30 award recipient by @acgc_now

Ameen’s work bridges sport and healthcare, where barriers to access can often determine opportunity.

“Sport shaped my sense of community growing up and taught me many important lessons that have helped me over the course of my education,” says Ameen. “For many children, the barrier is not motivation, but it is the gap between wanting to participate and having a fair chance to do so.”

Guided by a belief that people thrive when they feel heard, respected, and included, he focuses on creating pathways for children to build belonging, confidence, and lifelong health through sport.

In 2023, Ameen co‑founded the Cleats4Kids Foundation, a non‑profit that is reducing barriers to sport for low‑income families, refugee and newcomer youth, and children living with disabilities.

Through partnerships with schools, settlement agencies, and local sport organizations, Cleats4Kids delivers free, inclusive soccer programming and community events, including an innovative visually impaired soccer program designed with
accessibility and confidence building at its core.

“For many families, it is one of the first sporting spaces where their child can participate fully and feel like they belong,” he says.

As he looks toward his future, these experiences have helped shape how Ameen approaches medicine and healthcare. “Health outcomes depend on more than clinical care. They depend on access, understanding, and whether people feel welcome engaging
with the system,” he says.

Through his work with Calgary’s Student Run Clinic and his role as the Orbis Canada UCalgary Lead, he continues to build toward a future where medicine is more accessible and rooted in community.

Congratulations Ameen on this well‑deserved recognition!

What if we could give the body new “living” tools to not only treat diseases but prevent them altogether?

As @UCalgary marks its 60th anniversary, #UCalgaryMed’s Living Medicines interdisciplinary research initiative highlights how the university’s medical research continues to shape the future of health care.

It builds on the momentum of our world-leading International Microbiome Centre (IMC), Riddell Centre for Cancer Immunotherapy, and seven research institutes at the Cumming School of Medicine.

Led by Drs. Kathy McCoy, PhD, and Kevin Hay, MD, the Living Medicines Initiative (LMI) is working to advance therapies based on cells, genes and microbes, and how these therapies could transform treatment for cancer, autoimmune disease and more.

Building on research in microbiome science and cancer immunotherapy, teams are working to better understand how the body’s own systems can be used to fight illness—opening new possibilities for conditions that are still difficult to treat today.

Prosper, a Calgary‑based global health advocate, has been named one of this year’s @acgc_now Top 30 Under 30 for his leadership in advancing youth-centered health equity. At just 20 years old, Prosper has established himself as a committed researcher, community builder, and emerging voice in public health.

Propser is a current Bachelor of Science student who has worked with an impressive list of UCalgary
initiatives and institutes, including @healuofc, @obrien_iph and @righttoplayuofc. He is currently a research assistant with @libininstitute.

Across these roles, he focuses on improving access to health and wellness supports for young people, particularly those facing systemic barriers. He also helps connect people separated by systems, creating spaces where knowledge can move in both directions.

His approach blends evidence‑based research with a strong emphasis on empathy and youth engagement. He champions the belief that meaningful progress occurs when young people are empowered to shape the policies and programs that affect their lives.

Prosper’s guiding principle reflects this commitment: “Equity becomes real when evidence meets empathy, and when youth are trusted to  co‑create the change they want to see.”

Prosper’s recognition as a 2026 Top 30 Under 30 honouree highlights both his impact to date and his growing influence in the field of global health. His work continues to inspire a new generation of leaders dedicated to building more equitable, inclusive systems of care.

Advocacy has been a lifelong journey for Caitlyn Ungrin, a fourth year #UCalgaryMed Bachelor of Community Rehabilitation (BCR) student.

Growing up in a family of outspoken academics and medical professionals, Caitlyn’s parents modelled for her the confidence to speak up from an early age.

“I realized that, if you don’t say something, nothing’s going to change,” she says.

Caitlyn now works, volunteers and focuses her education on being an advocate for neurodivergent students @UCalgary.

A strong and visible representative for inclusion on campus, her impact has included the creation of a practicum position for neurodivergent BCR students. Since 2023, several BCR practicum students have worked with the initiative, thanks to Caitlyn.

Now completing the final BCR practicum of her degree, Caitlyn continues to be a champion for greater accessibility as part of the Work-Integrated Learning for Neurodivergent Students Initiative (WIL ND Initiative) at UCalgary, presenting at conferences, speaking on student panels, and supporting one-to-one.

Across all of Ungrin’s work as an advocate, one thing has always remained clear:

“When people see you care, they care more, too,” she says. “When they see you trying, it’s more likely that they’ll speak up next time. You can build our own community through advocacy.”

From Turkeys to Tanukis, #UCalgaryMed’s medical class naming tradition has connected generations of physicians for nearly 50 years. Today is National Physicians’ Day, and we’re proud to recognize our #UCalgaryMed menagerie and celebrate the profound impact physicians make every day. 🩺

The naming tradition began decades ago, inspired by a professor who once described his students as a “bunch of turkeys.” The name stuck and so did the tradition, with a new class name being added to the menagerie every year.

Embraced as a badge of honour, each animal name remains a lasting part of a class’s identity, well beyond convocation and throughout their careers as physicians.

With more than 4,800 alumni, almost half of which serve patients across southern Alberta, #UCalgaryMed graduates are contributing nationally and globally through research, education, leadership, and advocacy.

To all our alumni—whether Bonobo or Bandicoot, Panda or Poodle—thank you for the care, leadership, and expertise you bring to medicine!

A #UCalgaryMed Bachelor of Community Rehabilitation student and published researcher, Laiba has a special interest in the intersections of health care, technology and equity. In 2022, she founded the Medically Autonomous Youth Society, and this year launched Medically Autonomous Youth Technology (MAYTECH), a startup using medical research-supported AI to interpret lab results.

We celebrate Laiba’s advocacy and her commitment to advancing disability justice and the responsible integration of artificial intelligence in public health.

Laiba’s Top 20 Under 20 award is only one of her many achievements. Her leadership and advocacy in mental health, accessibility and youth engagement earned her the 2024 City of Calgary Youth Achievement Award. She is also an accomplished debater and speaker who has mentored students across Canada to enhance their public speaking skills.

Congrats Laiba! 👏🏼

At a small café just off Calgary’s 17th Avenue, Norm Johnson was known for quiet acts of kindness: picking up tabs, leaving gift cards to pay for a meal for those in need, striking up conversations with strangers. He was also open about living with mental illness — helping break stigma simply by showing up as himself. He paid for your coffee but gave so much more.

Today, Norm’s generosity lives on, inspiring a powerful movement to advance mental health research and care at the Cumming School of Medicine.

The Mental Health Initiative for Stress and Trauma (MIST), within the Mathison Centre for Mental Health Research & Education, is developing new ways to understand and treat complex mental health challenges — supporting people long after trauma and brain injury, and focusing on the whole person, not just the diagnosis.

Congratulations to #UCalgaryMed alum Rochelle Mission Deloria, BHSc’21 on her @acgc_now 2026 Top 30 under 30 win!

Rochelle Mission Deloria is currently a @ucsocialwork master’s student @ucalgary. Her thesis, Caring for Others to Care for Myself explores the experiences of racialized young sibling caregivers in Canada, influenced by her own experience as a caregiver to her younger sibling.

“Moving through clinical spaces alongside my family revealed how siblings and caregivers are often relied upon to hold families together while being excluded from decision making, particularly in immigrant households.”

Rochelle’s research makes unpaid and gendered care labour visible, positioning caregivers as knowledge holders with key insights into how care, family, and responsibility are understood in policy and practice.

Intersectionality and relationality play a key role in Rochelle’s approach to working in community. “When I’m first entering a space, I often introduce myself first as a second-generation Filipina Canadian, an older sister, a student, and a community member before naming my professional roles. This is intentional — my work is not separate from my lived experience.”

She has worked with @Filipinos_Rising (FRIENDS), and @ActionDignity to help curate spaces that bring together youth, families, clinicians, researchers, and community members for conversations grounded in listening rather than performance.

She had the opportunity to take part in a speaking event with youth she had previously worked with, talking about how they had shaped her path. “That experience reinforced for me that connection is reciprocal and that meaningful collaboration requires humility, patience and a willingness to be changed by the people you work with!”

Well said, Rochelle
