Dear community,
TSV is currently on hiatus, so there are no classes until further notice. But don’t worry, we’ll be back soon!! 🖤
We’re taking this time to find more sustainable ways to continue offering this space for everyone. TSV is powered by working artist volunteers who care deeply about supporting this community, and we’re committed to returning with intention and strength 🙌🏻
Thank you for such a beautiful season so far 🖤
Stay tuned 🔥

This week! Calder White 🖤
April 6/8/10
Description of the class:
Floorworkshops provide a space for us to use principles of momentum and counter-direction to safely and efficiently pour weight into the floor. This class combines elements from contemporary and modern dance forms, breaking, and various somatic practices like Alexander Technique to introduce and build upon floorwork fundamentals. We’ll research how to fold and position our bodies to roll, slide, spill and sweep through space. We’ll use developmental movement pathways to become more comfortable with gravity. We’ll practice falling and we’ll embrace the bumps and clunks that occur along the way.

UP NEXT! Calder White 🖤
April 6/8/10
Calder White is a freelance dance artist based on the unceded and stolen lands of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations (“Vancouver, BC, Canada”). He pulls heavily from his training in Limón, Bartenieff Fundamentals, and Countertechnique to inform his teachings of weight, fall and suspension, and compartmentalizing the body. Calder has shared his workshops with institutions across North America including Modus Operandi, University of California Santa Barbara, Yukon Contemporary Training Community, Ottawa Dance Directive, and Hamilton College. Training and performing with Shay Kuebler since the summer of 2017, he brings Shay’s ideas surrounding floorwork into the studio and focuses on foundational movements/drills originating in breaking and martial arts to facilitate healthy relationships with gravity. Calder choreographs his own work and is a company member with Radical System Art, Josh Beamish/MOVE the company, and Santa Barbara Dance Theater.

THIS WEEK! Carla Alcántara
March 30/April 1st 🖤
About Carla:
Carla Alcántara is a Mexican multidisciplinary artist, emerging choreographer, photographer, videographer, and educator, gratefully living and working as a guest on the ancestral and unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples or so-called Vancouver since 2021.
She believes dance is a powerful tool for self-discovery that deepens human connection and supports the building of stronger communities.
Carla graduated from the Centre for Dance and Scenic Production of Baja California, a program funded by the contemporary dance company Lux Boreal, where she served as a resident dancer and photographer for three years. She is the founder and co-director of TEMPO Dance & Visual Art alongside Marco Esccer. Carla has performed and collaborated in creative processes with artists, choreographers, and companies internationally across Mexico, the USA, Canada, Brazil, and Malaysia.
Since arriving in Canada, she has presented work at Stand Festival, All Over the Map, 12 Minutes Max, NextFest (Edmonton), The Dance Centre, Pop-Up Dances, Vines, and IndieFest. She has also worked with choreographers including Charlotte Boye-Christensen, Alina Sotskova, Jennifer Aoki, and Rachel Maddock.
Carla currently teaches dance at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts and works as a guest choreographer with their youth and adult companies (Youth in Motion and Continuum), while continuing to offer workshops with diverse communities throughout Metro Vancouver.

UP NEXT! Carla Alcántara March 30 & April 1st 🖤
Description of the class:
This class begins with a deep warm-up that awakens the body from the inside out through sensation, breath, conscious movement, conditioning, and alignment.
Drawing from release, Limón, and floorwork practices like “piso movil”, we will research movement patterns that spiral, swing, slide, anchor, invert, and suspend the body through space. We will explore floorwork with the floor as a partner, transitioning through, into and out of it with ease and curiosity.
As the class progresses, the movement will build into more dynamic phrases, challenging coordination and spatial awareness, but also allowing space for improvisation, sensation, and play. A huge part of this class is to invite dancers to play, have fun, move fully and connect with one another, creating a shared community experience.

THIS WEEK! Kate Franklin
March 20/23/25/27
Description of the class:
This class will be mostly follow-the-leader/flow style from the side of the room, which we will interrupt a few times to work on set material in the centre. I’m still obsessed with practising a really intentional weight transfer pathway through my feet, pronation/supination of my feet and internal rotation of my hip joints and lower leg bones.
We’re going to squat, hinge and jump and also do degagés.
I have been on a journey of discovering (rediscovering?) movements that I accidentally cut out of my life because I applied some dance notes too widely at some point decades ago. If that sounds interesting to you, come join me.
No matter what, the soundtrack will be good.

THIS WEEK! Kate Franklin
March 20/23/25/27 🖤
About Kate:
Kate has danced for around 50 different choreographers and directors over the past 20-or-so years. She spent the first ten years of her career in Toronto/Tkaronto working as a dancer, choreographer and educator, and co-directing three female-led collectives, all with different missions/mandates. She also walked dogs, babysat children, taught Yoga, cleaned a woodwinds repair shop, and won a Dora Mavor Moore award for her work on Gotta Go Church, choreographed by Valerie Calam. Based in Vancouver on unceded and traditional MST territories since 2012, she works as a dancer/collaborator for Company 605, Justine A. Chambers, Tara Cheyenne Performance, and Jeanette Kotowich/Movement Healing, amongst others. Since 2016 she has been Associate Artistic Director of Modus Operandi, where she teaches and mentors a group of exceptionally talented emerging dance artists. Kate’s own choreographic work has been shown most recently at Boombox, Dancing on the Edge and the EDAM Choreographic Series. Kate teaches because she is still fully engaged in training and learning. Strength training at Madlab School of Fitness has been a main focus for her for 8 years. Her work with Montréal-based movement coach Neil Sochasky is a huge current influence. Teaching at Working Class is a rare opportunity for her to be in dialogue with her peers about the stuff she is thinking about and practising.
