Many of us get into trail running because of its non-linear, anti-cookie-cutter method of training. Sometimes it’s less about miles and times and more about focusing on where your feet—or hands—are going.

However, that can also be the most frustrating aspect to accept, especially as we strive to improve.

Unlike road running, where distances and times are easily measurable, trail running often lacks the same level of precision. But don’t worry, you can still assess and benchmark your progress. At the link in bio, we explore various methods of tracking trail running progress that don’t require pinning on a race bib.

There’s nothing better than a perfectly groomed trail with a spectacular view.

Whether your idea of a good time is a rock scramble up a mountain or sending some flowy singletrack through the woods, independent trail races have something for every runner. We’ve rounded up 13 trail runs in the most beautiful places in the country, from misty forests and mountain summits to prairie fields and stream crossings, so you can choose your own adventure.

@gibbstack is an ultrarunner and lead singer of @deathcabforcutie 🪩 Today during his talk with @scottjurek they covered the intersection of ultrarunning, songwriting, and the beauty of aging. Another unreal conversation during Outside Days.

Ben Gibbard was 36 years old when he ran his first 30K. The lead singer and guitarist of @deathcabforcutie had already been nominated for numerous Grammys, sold out countless shows, and firmly established himself as an icon of American indie music when he laced up his Brooks Adrenalines for the Golden Gate Trail Run 30K and discovered what was to become a new passion: ultrarunning.

Outside columnist @rylee_en chatted with @gibbstack about inspiration, hard work, music, and more. Read the full story at the link in our bio or in print in our latest summer issue.

At last month's Eugene Marathon, 58-year-old ultramarathoner, podcaster, and bowhunting influencer @cameronrhanes ran 2:39:11, winning the masters division and beating his recent best by more than 10 minutes in an age-graded equivalent time of 2:10:56.

Since then, an internet controversy has erupted. @sagecanaday accused Hanes of using a banned substance called BPC-157 and filed a tip with the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA). Hanes doubled down, saying that he's not a pro athlete.

The back-and-forth has left the rest of us wondering: What rules should, or shouldn’t, apply to masters runners? How do you distinguish a back-of-the-pack runner on a blood-pressure medication that theoretically requires a medical exemption from a competitive age-group contender seeking an advantage? And what exactly is BPC-157? We dive into the controversy at the link in bio.

When looking to assess running fitness, many runners jump to measurements like VO2 max, lactate threshold, and running economy.

But as race duration increases, these metrics become less prominent, and durability becomes more of a key factor. How can you build durability in your running? Turns out it's surprisingly simple. Read what the experts have to say at the link in bio.

Running an ultra doesn’t just mean enduring discomfort during the race. Many times, the worst pain comes later, in the days and sometimes the weeks that follow, when your pissed-off body tries to recover from the nuclear bomb you just detonated inside it.

Luckily, there are a lot of ways (eating, drinking, napping) to recover. Head to the link in bio to learn how you can bounce back from an ultramarathon as quickly and painlessly as possible.
