A bit of digging and a lot of heart results in a transformed park.
Rowntree Mills Park is located at 155 Rowntree Mill Road along the banks of the Humber River between Finch Avenue West and Steeles Avenue West.
Nestled in the Humber Watershed, this 92-hectare park is a mix of deciduous and coniferous forest, with 12% of the area occupied by wetlands - the Rowntree Mill Swamp is considered an Environmentally Significant Area (ESA).
The park is part of the corridor link between the Ontario lakeshore and the upper East Humber.
Habitat connectivity along riparian corridors is extremely important for first-year migrant songbirds. As the quality of the habitat patch improves, so will the representation of flora and fauna species within that habitat.
Maintenance and enhancement of these corridors' connectivity through natural cover will improve the opportunities for dispersal of breeding and migrating fauna.
Last fall, this area in Rowntree Mills Park was planted as part of a volunteer event for newcomers to Canada as a welcome and introduction to Toronto’s Urban Forest. Participants planted native species like Red Maple (Acer rubrum), Serviceberry (Amelanchier canadensis), and Spicebush (Lindera benzoin), as well as wildflowers like Joe-pye Weed (Eupatorium maculatum) and Flat-topped White Aster (Doellingeria umbellata).
Their contributions will increase local biodiversity and provide valuable wildlife habitat. Thanks to everyone’s efforts, nearly 500 native trees, shrubs and wildflowers were planted.
As with any natural area and especially in ESAs, remember to treat them with respect by keeping pets on a leash or harness and staying on trail to avoid disturbing the plants and animals that call this place home.
Descriptive Transcript: City of Toronto staff, Lorraine, is speaking to the camera while standing beneath park trees at Rowntree Mills Park. The planting area is shown as staff prepare for the tree planting event by placing plants, unloading equipment, and providing a planting demonstration to volunteers. The video ends with a shot of the planting area full of newly planted native trees and shrubs, each surrounded by a ring of mulch.
🚨🐦 Heads up! It’s migration season on the Toronto waterfront, meaning the city is temporarily home to millions of birds passing through on their journey to northern breeding grounds! ️🍃
