On 15 April 2019, fire struck Notre Dame of Paris. This weekend, the cathedral will reopen to the public. Has my hero fallen? At the very start of my photography career, I attended the Eddie Adams workshop. There I met Kim Phuc, who as a young girl in Vietnam was the innocent victim of a horrific napalm airstrike. Moments later, she was recorded in perhaps the most memorable war photograph ever taken. At the workshop, Kim Phuc gave a joint presentation with Nick Ut, who was credited with taking that picture. For me, the most influential part of their talk was when Nick Ut stated that after taking the picture, he set his camera aside to rescue Kim Phuc and drive her to the hospital. At the time, both Nick Ut and I were staff photographers for the Associated Press. After that talk, Nick Ut became my role model. He had achieved the gold standard of ethical action in wartime, both as a witness and a humanitarian. After several years with the AP, I went freelance and eventually joined the VII Photo Agency. Today, VII’s co-founder Gary Knight, is at the heart of an investigation about the attribution of that famous picture. I just watched a pre-release of “The Stringer,” the Netflix documentary about that investigation. It amasses overwhelming evidence that points to another Vietnamese photographer, Nguyễn Thành Nghệ, as the true author of that photograph. From my point of view, the most heartbreaking aspect of the film were the interviews with eyewitnesses of the airstrike–including relatives of Kim Phuc–who stated that Nick Ut did not drive her to the hospital either. It is devastating to watch such a highly inspirational backstory crumble. The only consolation is that the main force of the photo—to document the horror of war–is not disputed, and that the author who appears to have been erased from history will finally get his overdue credit. The documentary does laudable work correcting the photo’s attribution, but I also want to know the identity of the person that actually rescued Kim Phuc and drove her to the hospital.
