I want my journey in music to be a long one. Because of this, I’ve realized I’ve got to choose two things daily…

Without those, a temporary slump has the tendency to turn into bitterness and negativity.

And that shit has a way of getting you slowly pushedto the edges… first being avoided and eventually forgotten by your peers who know this truth:

When my friends a @leicacamerausa told me I needed a weather sealed camera and @brianbowensmith said the Elmarit 24-70mm f/2.8 was a must-have lens for portraits, I thought…

“When the hell am I going to be worried about splashes, and not have time to switch from a wide lens to a telephoto?”

A week later… I was neck deep in Lake Nokomis on a shoot with @caitlynsmith

The new Martin Short documentary on Netflix reminded me of something from his memoir, I Must Say.

After a rough stretch in life, he realized he’d wasted months just sulking by the phone waiting for things to change. So he came up with something he called “The Nine Categories” a way to take inventory of his life using logic instead of emotion.

He viewed life almost like a school year. September through May. Nine categories like a course load.

If one category was getting a D… hopefully another was getting an A.

1. Self: health, survival, checkups, taking care of yourself because everything unravels if this falls apart.

2. Immediate family: wife, kids, the people closest to you.

3. Original family: how things are with the people you grew up with.

4. Friends: unresolved resentment, honesty, connection. “You’ve got to have good friends and good lighting.” - Bette Midler

5. Money: “I’ve been rich and I’ve been poor. Rich is better.”

6. Career: as his answering machine supposedly said: “I’ll take it.”

7. Creativity: not just work… but whether the work actually fulfills you.

8. Discipline: focus, consistency, the ability to finish things.

9. Lifestyle: are you having fun? And are you making the world a little better while you’re here?

Been thinking a lot about how easy it is to think life is failing because one category is struggling… while completely ignoring the others.
