Though I’ve interviewed Future twice before, I’ll admit, I had a little bit of nerves this time around because I wanted to make sure I truly pulled back the curtains on one of rap’s most intriguing and polarizing superstars. I have to credit @ebsdaboss for not only her massive wins this year with Future and Gunna, but also entrusting us with such a story and participating alongside her client at the beginning of the interview. Last year, I started a wrestling x hip-hop column called Mic Drops & Elbow Drops.

It came from a challenge to use my voice more. I was already landing A-tier interviews, but I needed to push myself as a writer. Think bigger. Say more.

So I built something different.

Entry 001 — my debut piece — was an ode to John Cena’s debut album You Can’t See Me and its 20th anniversary. To me, it’s a project that bridged hip-hop and wrestling before that was even a thing. But writing about it wasn’t enough.

I kept asking myself: how do we really honor that moment and make something special? After talking with my WWE road dog @fencetaken , we decided to gift him a plaque celebrating You Can’t See Me turning 20.

After 7 months of pushing, following up, and not taking no for an answer… we finally got Cena his plaque.

And we got to hand it to him and simply say, “thank you.”

This wasn’t just a bucket list interview.

This was proof that if I really want to make something happen…I fucking can. And I fucking will.
