I was asked by my Tribe to host a podcast series about our tribal government. This series was/is intended to celebrate and educate our Nations Sovereignty. We were scheduled to speak with Chief Jim Gray on Thursday morning, but he wasn’t feeling well so we decided to reschedule. Chief left this world later that day. I wanted to ask and listen to all he had to say about being a catalyst for change for our peoples rights and self governance. Before he ratified our Constitution, as Chief of the Osage Nation, Our people were living under a government imposed on us by the United States. I also wanted to tell him about the first time I heard him speak. When I was in grade school in Wichita, Ks he came to speak to all the NDN kids at the Title VI day at the Indian Center. They introduced an Osage man who was to speak to us and that was Jim Gray. I still remember his graphic black and white suit. I paid extra attention cuz he was Osage like me. He told us that we come from good people and they had good ways and that we can learn about them if we wanted to. He emphasized education and knowing Who we are. He told us that WE Were Somebody. He gave us visibility even if just in our own eyes. I Was somebody, and I could be anything I wanted to Be. I wanted to thank him and let him know that he empowered little Amy. It is touching to hear all of the wonderful tributes made to Chief Gray since his passing. He empowered many through out his career. He did so with humility, humor, and a genuine desire to help people. He gave US our Sovereignty AND demonstrated how good a human can be. Rest in Power and Peace Profound, Chief Gray.
