I drank water straight off this glacier while I was pregnant with her and said a prayer that it would somehow make her love ice as much as I do. We carried her out here when she was a baby, sat her down on a jacket so she could touch the ice before she could even walk, and have been telling her stories about these glaciers since before she could talk.

This year felt like an entirely new experience unlocked - for the first time she is stable and confident enough on her feet for us to trust her navigating the ice on her own (with close monitoring, of course!) with spikes on her boots. It was so fun to watch her gain confidence, learn to trust her feet (and learn when it’s too steep for them to grip), and fall in love with this landscape on her own.

It didn’t come without discomfort! We learned her boots were leaking and her socks got wet, we should have packed even more snacks than expected, and by the end we were all quite grumpy. Gone (for now) are the days of multi-mile quests into the backcountry on the glacier carrying rafts & ice gear, spending hours out on the ice, and doing whatever we want for as long as we want. There will be plenty of time for that in the future, but for now we’re pretty happy with this short little loop showing our girl a glimpse into the world that made us fall in love with Alaska in the first place.

Glaciers are hard, and there are none with easy access up here. But when we can pull it off, it’s always worth a few hours on the ice 🧊🩵

I can’t believe how quickly Alaska season is coming up 🧊 We have some really fun elopements planned this summer and lots of glacier adventures ahead. There is something so magical about getting married in a glacier because they’re always changing, so you’re truly the only ones to experience it in this exact way. You never know when a pool will drain or fill, when a slot canyon will open up, or when a waterfall will start gushing through the ice. It’s always exciting out here! @micaguides

I honestly don’t do many surprise proposal shoots because the logistics can be so intense and the pressure is huge!! But I’ll never forget the first time Rachel texted me she’d met a guy, or one morning over coffee on the patio when she told me she loved him, or when we were hiking and she said they’d started talking about marriage. We got to be neighbors through it all, watching their love story unfold and develop here in Moab through the seasons, and when Tanner reached out to tell me Rachel’s only request about their engagement was that I’d be there to photograph it, I simply couldn’t imagine being anywhere else 🥲

The logistics of surprising her were not easy. From Tanner overnighting the ring to our house & setting up a family dinner to retrieve it, to me borrowing a friend’s car & getting a disguise on so Rachel wouldn’t know I was there, to my chaotic videos & map drawings for where he should stand & where I’d be hiding down to the minute…it all came together for the perfect morning in the place we’ve all fallen so deeply in love with. I got be there to watch my two friends start their whole life together and I couldn’t be more grateful.
