Welcoming stunning, but scared 'Sheila', who is suffering from horrific degloving, abrasion, and laceration wounds to her right front leg. Her injuries were likely sustained while she was pulling herself free from an entrapment. (2nd photo — viewer discretion advised). 💔

Sheila was spotted, reported, and contained by a caring householder using one of our humane cage traps. Our clinical team has begun her treatment plan, and we’re hopeful for a full recovery.

Once she no longer requires daily wound cleans, our goal is for Sheila to move from the hospital and finish her rehab in one of our outdoor foster pens - a less daunting, more natural environment. However, most of our pens are currently occupied by the large numbers of cubs we have rescued this year.

👉 How You Can Help:

- Funding for more pens: If you can help fund the construction of additional pens (built in-house to reduce rescue costs), we can continue to provide care for patients in a less daunting environment. You can donate through the link in our bio.

- Fostering Opportunities (Local): If you have a private garden, some spare time, live within a 30-minute drive of our hospital, in Paddock Wood, TN12, and would like to foster a rehabilitating adult or a group of up to 5 cubs, please contact: fox@foxproject.org.uk

- Tough Mudder fundraiser thanks: A huge thank you to our fearless Tough Mudder team (15 km, 20 obstacles) who are in training for this extreme challenge on 19 September to help raise funds for these pens. To join the team, email: fundraising@foxproject.org.uk

Your generosity truly makes a difference.🙏

This report began in heartbreak, yet it grew into something beautiful.

Vixens often receive help from their mate or a daughter from a previous litter when raising their cubs, and it was wonderful to witness this.

Good luck little family 🧡

Fox Project Community,

Thanks to you, our Fox Food Bank Appeal has officially reached its target—and become the biggest fundraising effort in The Fox Project’s history. We are incredibly grateful.

Over the past few months, you’ve stood with us through one of the busiest and most demanding orphan seasons we’ve faced. Every donation, every share, every kind message, and every box of supplies sent to the hospital has helped foxes who desperately needed a second chance.

Because of your support, we’ve kept newborns warm through the night, provided life-saving formula to fragile cubs, supplied vital medications to sick and injured patients, and ensured every fox arriving at our doors receives the care, nutrition, and comfort they deserve.

In the coming days and weeks, we’ll share updates from the hospital and foster pens so you can see the difference your compassion is making firsthand—from tiny cubs taking their first steps toward recovery to injured adults returning to the wild where they belong.

During a time when wildlife charities face immense pressure, your kindness reminds us that people still care deeply about the future of British wildlife—especially about foxes, animals often misunderstood.

From all of us at The Fox Project—especially the foxes—thank you. Your compassion has already changed countless lives this orphan season, and somewhere tonight, because of you, a fox cub is warm, safe, fed, and alive. 🧡

🦊 What to Do if You See a Lone Fox Cub in Your Garden

At this point in fox cub season, it’s common to see young cubs alone in gardens or parks — but don’t worry! Here’s what you need to know:

Why might you see a lone cub?

Vixens are wonderful mothers who prepare multiple dens before giving birth. They often move their cubs between these dens for safety or if the current den becomes unsuitable. During these moves, she might leave a cub temporarily at a halfway point, where it will wait for her return. This is a normal part of their parenting behaviour.

👉 Should you do anything?

Leave the cub alone. Mother foxes have incredible maternal instincts — unless physically impossible, they’ll return for their young.

Keep your distance. Observe quietly from afar and avoid disturbing the cub or mother (she may be nearby).

Provide water. A shallow dish of fresh water in your garden can help them, especially during dry periods.

Monitor, but don’t intervene. If the cub appears injured, in immediate danger, or is vocalising persistently, contact a wildlife professional.

👉 Remember: Foxes are resilient and adapt well to all environments. Your garden can be a safe haven if you give them space and respect.

Another wonderful release.

This time, 'Ffion', who arrived with us with a horrific facial wound. (If you have a strong stomach, her report photo is fourth).

Reported and cage-trapped by a caring householder, Ffion was not the happiest patient—both at our hospital and in an outdoor foster pen. She longed for her freedom. So it was an absolute delight to have her finally signed off by our vet and to be able to take her home.

She has lost the use of her left eye; however, this will not affect her ability to hunt and thrive in the wild.

Stay safe, sweet vixen.

A 'Freedom Friday' that we are very happy to be able to share.

Terrified little 'Bart and Lisa', rescued bruised and bloodied from a football netting entanglement, have been signed off by our vet as fit to go home.

Check out how excited they were on their return. 🥰🥰

👉 Please remember that, sadly, not every entanglement rescue ends as fortunately. Many animals do not survive ordeals like this. Let’s keep rolling up our netting when not in use—two minutes of your time can save lives.

Recently rescued, 'Kitty' was found in a kind household’s kitchen, enjoying their cat's breakfast. 🙈

She has captured our hearts with her stunning appearance - you may wonder why her fur colour is so unique. Here are the possible explanations:

🤍 Fever Coat: This temporary change occurs when a mother fox is sick or stressed during pregnancy. The cub’s fur may appear lighter, grey, or silver due to stress or illness affecting pigment-producing cells. Fever coat usually fades as the cub grows and its adult coat develops.

🤍 Stress Coat: This describes fur changes in response to stress or anxiety. The colour change is temporary and not related to genetics. Once the stressor is removed, the fur colour and texture typically return to normal.

🤍 Genetic Factors: Cubs in a litter can have varying fur colours due to genetics or mutations affecting pigmentation. Some cubs may carry recessive genes or mutations, leading to fur differences from the typical red or orange. These variations reflect natural diversity in the red fox population and do not necessarily indicate a health issue. As Kitty matures, her fur colour may continue to change.

Our team will closely monitor this little vixen as she grows, and we’ll keep you updated on her progress.

Thank you for your continued support as we work to give Kitty and all the other cubs and adults in our care the best chance for a successful return to the wild! 🦊

One of today’s many rescues, but our favourite kind—when the rescued doesn’t need hospital admission. 🥰

We’re sure this little explorer will stay well away from there from now on!
