@gbhnews ran a piece on a Massachusetts gun class that was packed with new shooters, and the people in the room were not who the standard narrative would predict. A woman with PTSD around guns who said she never thought she would want one. A trans person who said they feel like they are firmly within the crosshairs of the current administration. People who do not buy their kids toy guns. People who watched what happened in Minnesota and decided they were not going to be unprepared if it happened near them.

Every one of them said some version of the same thing, which is that they are scared, they do not fully trust the government to protect them, and they would rather have the license and the training and decide later about the gun than wait until they need it and have neither.

People opposed to this are going to have to grapple with the pattern at some point. When people feel unsafe, they buy guns. Conservatives buy guns in record numbers when a democrat is in office because they always fear confiscation, and what is happening now is no different in principle. If you do not want people to buy guns, the answer is to create conditions that make them feel safer, not to lecture them about why their fear is the wrong kind of fear.

The interesting part is that the same people who spent the last decade insisting that fear-driven gun buying was irrational and dangerous when conservatives did it are now doing the exact thing they criticized, and the framing has quietly shifted from “this is hysteria” to “this is reasonable preparation.” We're not here to criticize folks for having a shift in perspective, we just hope this perspective is maintained across elections.

Armed minorities are harder to oppress, and that has always been true regardless of which administration is in office.
