April at-a-glance with Education at The Current! ✨

Our final two sessions of Art + Action featured Savannah Bailey from the Hanover Conservancy, who taught us about river management, erosion, and the important role beavers play in healthy ecosystems. Students then created their own river and erosion-inspired artworks exploring movement, texture, and landscape.

We wrapped up this special session with artist Thea Alvin, who shared her work, guided us in stacking rocks to connect with our “calm minds,” and led students in creating beautiful gravel mosaics.

A stellar group of 5th graders has also been coming together each week to strengthen and expand their drawing skills. Interested in creating your own custom class? You can design-a-class too—learn more on our website!

And finally: April Vacation Camp was an absolute blast. One standout project? These incredible hats, transformed with paper-mâché and paint into imaginative wearable artworks.

This Saturday and Sunday, we were thrilled to welcome Patty Hudak back to The Current for a weekend workshop exploring mokuhanga, the traditional Japanese method of woodblock printing.

Participants learned about the rich history of mokuhanga and the ways contemporary artists continue to use the medium today, before spending two immersive days carving, layering, printing, and experimenting with its tactile and expressive possibilities.

We still have space available in our upcoming two-day intensive focused entirely on mokuhanga printing techniques.

What an inspiring couple of weeks we've enjoyed in our Youth Afterschool classes 🌱

In week 3 of "Art + Action," Amy Erle and Ashley Proteau from Stowe Land Trust led us on a short hike, where students observed what they heard, saw, felt, and smelled; deepening their connection to the natural world. Back in the studio, they created banners expressing their stewardship of the outdoors.

In week 4, Renee Greenlee joined us to share her artwork and explore, and we talked about how patterns are all around us. After observing and sketching patterns in nature, students reflected on the patterns and habits we carry as humans, and how we can shift them to better care for the Earth. They then created artworks inspired by what they discovered outside.

Meanwhile, our artists in Fiber Fun & Fabric Creations have been building skills on sewing machines, exploring felting, and even repairing old clothes ♻️

Learn more about Afterschool Classes at The Current in the link in our bio.

So much creativity in motion these past few weeks in Youth Education at The Current! 🎨

In "Art + Action," we kicked things off with environmental artist Nancy Winship Milliken, who shared her practice before guiding students in creating their own “land impressions” using water and Buddha paper, along with woven wool works.

In week two, Janelle Jones of Northeast Wilderness Trust joined us to explore the importance of old-growth forests. Students translated that learning into a series of tree-inspired artworks using creativity as a tool for understanding and connection.

Meanwhile, in "Fiber Fun & Fabric Creations," students have been building confidence with needle and thread, bringing their own handmade stuffies to life.

And in "Clay Critters" young artists have been researching animals and insects, transforming their discoveries into clay creations while developing hand-building skills (and having plenty of fun in the studio along the way).

A powerful week at The Current.

On Tuesday, interdisciplinary artist Mary Mattingly joined art historian Dr. Julie Reiss for a conversation about art, climate change, and the evolving role of artists in responding to ecological crisis.

Throughout the week, Mary also led cyanotype workshops with 2nd–4th grade students from Stowe Elementary School, where students experimented with composition, pattern, and sunlight to create their own prints, and asked thoughtful questions about her artistic process.

And tonight, our winter series concludes with a student poetry reading featuring 7th and 8th grade students from Stowe Middle School. Inspired by Water Writes the Garden, their poems explore climate change, interconnected life systems, and water as storyteller and timekeeper.

Thank you to everyone who joined us this week to explore the connections between art, ecology, and community.

Supported by the Vermont Arts Council + National Endowment for the Arts and Hinda + Joel Miller.
