Eight years ago, when she opened SpecialTea House in Greenport, Deborah Schade was aiming to create a feminine escape. A 35-year salon owner and operator, Schade’s a natural businesswoman — and her licensed esthetician daughter, Victoria, is following in her footsteps.

In 2018, the duo turned a three-story Victorian home on Main Street into a charmingly quaint tearoom, salon and spa called Special Effects offering an array of services, along with small bites, teas, desserts, herbal and tisane beverages and a cool collection of gifts.

Saylor Beach House is the newest addition to Greenport’s waterfront dining scene, inspired by a multi decade-long friendship between music icon Taylor Dayne and hospitality guru Celeste Fierro.

The pair debuted the Mediterranean-inspired restaurant and bar during a Sunday Funday event on May 17 with a surprise performance of Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary” by Dayne at Claudio’s Waterfront, across the marina. Read more at our #linkinbio!

The Nameless Writers Salon returns on Tuesday, May 26 to the Sound View Greenport with a lineup of literary heavy hitters on the schedule.

The 15th installment of the literary series hosted by @karabellaa will feature bestselling authors Chris Pavone, Brooke Lea Foster, Annie Hartnett, Jennifer O’Brien and Mary Latham for an evening of readings and conversation around the theme of “Becoming.” Participants will discuss the journeys that shape who we are through power, place, history, myth, reinvention, emotional inheritance and transformation.

At the heart of the natural North Fork are three things that aren’t always as showy in their consistent, daily presence: insects, birds and native plants. Yet despite their tenacious existence, there’s so much we can learn about them and why they’re deeply important to the health of our local lands.

The three buzzy, feathered and leafy locals here came about millions of years ago and have co-evolved ever since. One cannot exist without the other but, due to the modern normalization of straying from what the environment needs to thrive, the North Fork’s natural world has felt the impacts.

At first glance, lion’s mane and oyster mushrooms can be beautifully intriguing and thoroughly intimidating. The former resembles a large, white, shaggy clump; the latter has a cap shape that mimics the bivalve of the same name. So odd-looking are they, a home cook might pass on cooking with these funky fungi.

Satisfy all your cravings in one place this weekend — Foodie Fest is coming to Riverhead’s Tanger Outlets with over 10 different food trucks, an assortment of food stands and loads of entertainment.
