Spending the past week in Tokyo and Kyoto as part of the judging team for this year’s SIP Supernova with Pernod Ricard has been one of the most fulfilling experiences I’ve had in this industry.
Watching the 28 competitors arrive as strangers, then slowly become a team of people backing each other, cheering each other on and genuinely wanting everyone to do well was really special to see. A lot of them came in nervous or quiet, but over the week you could see people relax, open up and really grow in confidence. By the final challenge, they felt like completely different people from the group that first walked through the door thanks to the community they had built around them.
The atmosphere all week was just incredible. So much support, excitement and care for one another. It reminded me exactly why I fell in love with this industry in the first place.
Massive congratulations to Juseong, Enzo and Zach for taking home the trophy. But honestly, I don’t think anyone left this week feeling like they lost.
The value of real community-led advocacy isn’t always immediate, and it can sometimes be difficult to justify. But the impact this project had on everyone involved felt undeniable. The joy and connection it created reached far beyond the competition itself, and I really hope more people choose to invest in projects like this in the years ahead.
Also a massive thank you to the Sweet&Chilli team, and the Pernod Ricard Global and Japan teams, who pulled off such a huge and complicated event so effortlessly. The amount of work happening behind the scenes must have been enormous, but the whole week felt smooth from start to finish.
And a big thank you to my fellow judges and everyone else involved for making the whole week such a laugh. So many good conversations, late nights, ridiculous moments and genuinely lovely people to share the experience with.
I’m heading back to London feeling very full-hearted, very inspired, and very excited to bring a little bit of this energy back home with me. 🇯🇵🍸
