I am enjoying mornings at the moment these days of the earliest stirrings of spring perusing the pages of my beloved @aftelierperfume beautiful new book Symbolorum in which she has brought back to life 400 year old emblems that are a long lost cousin of the tarot.

Emblems, hailing from the seventeenth century, were engravings that through elements of the natural world each held symbolism & wisdom. Each emblem, its own magical little world, has been breathed back to life through being hand colored by Mandy & comes with a motto & translation of the original text.

I love that they reflect a worldview in which everything in the cosmos is connected & full of meaning as it feeds the soul & has been so lost in our modern world. It feels like a beautiful way to reconnect with nature, especially right now with everything just beginning to awaken here in the northern hemisphere after winter.

And I have been loving using the book as an oracle & opening the book to any page each morning to receive wisdom for the day. The fox feels especially meaningful as we have had a fox visitor coming to our front door every night for the last couple of months. Mandy’s Symbolorum book teaches the wisdom of the fox is to trust wisely & is a guide to intuitive intelligence.

And so the cycle begins again, the Celtic New Year began yesterday. Known as Samhain in Scotland & Ireland which translates to ‘summers end’ from Gaelic and marks the beginning of winter. For the Celts, it was a time of bringing in the last of the harvest & preparing for the darkness of winter. A moment in time between the light half of the year & the dark half of the year where the veil between our world & the spirit world is at its thinnest, of honoring our ancestors as is also done in many other parts of the world at this time.

The Ouroboros, an ancient symbol of a serpent devouring it’s tail, that represents the never ending cycle of life & death felt like an appropriate image for this moment in the year of the snake. The snake symbolizes transformation & rebirth and 2025 has definitely been such a year for many of us through the transformative energies of the fires in January.

I painted this Ouroboros a while ago, after meeting a rattlesnake in a dream & on our land within a few days of one another. It is not uncommon for us to find rattlesnakes where we live. When we bought our house, the lovely couple we were buying it from told us they would leave the snake grabbers for us as they often found rattlesnakes on the property which almost gave me second thoughts about the sale.
However in the years since, my hubby has become pretty skilled at catching & relocating them, though we have seen none this year since the fires.

There are no rattlesnakes in Scotland where I am from, but I have come to love the American West & all its inhabitants including these who instill caution & teach us about boundaries. I have lived here for many years now, yet I still have a sense of being displaced, of not quite belonging. So I have been diving deeper into my own roots, my own ancestors & today I am honoring these ancient peoples from my homeland who honored the natural cycles & have much to teach us about living in reciprocity with the earth on whom we depend for everything.

I am playing with adding the life cycle of one of my favorite roses to the painting to embellish the meaning behind the Ouroboros. What do you think?

I haven’t been on here much lately & seldom post modeling pics but this @gucci gifting campaign with my baby feels like a special moment to share. Gucci was the first fashion show I ever walked in & one of the first campaigns I ever shot, so it feels incredible to come full circle & shoot this campaign with @violethume who’s first show & campaign were also for Gucci. A magical moment I never could have imagined back then in this wild journey of life. ✨🤍

On the first day of Spring twenty years ago, just as the sun broke through the clouds, my baby came into this world & she has been a light in my life every day since.

Not to say we didn’t have our moments through the teenage years, but I knew it was part of her job at that age, to individuate, to figure out who she was as a human being & I love the human being she is.

She was born deeply thoughtful, deeply caring, deeply insightful, you could see it in her eyes & even in those moments we disagreed during her teens, I was always blown away at how she would see through to the heart of the matter, how important understanding one another was to her, honoring our words & one another.

So it seems only natural that she was drawn to study psychology. I think there could not be a more important time for us all to understand ourselves more deeply, our shadow, our trauma & do the healing work we need to do to heal collectively & find a peaceful way of being on this earth.

I am so grateful for her presence on this earth & to be her mama. I am so grateful to have the opportunity to come full circle after the teenage years & be best friends that I never had the opportunity to have with my Mum.

I finally finished this painting started many, many moons ago. 🌕🌕🌕

Maybe it would have been more appropriate to post this on the full moon, yet it feels like a potent time being the lunar new year & my intention for this year to CREATE & perhaps I am in a way holding myself accountable to my intention.

Since I was knee high I knew I wanted to be an artist, yet I somehow managed to take a thirty year detour after being whisked off into the fashion industry just as I was about to begin art college.

I know deep in my bones that my heart & soul need for me to paint, to find joy in creative expression. Finding out about my heart issue last year brought into focus in an instant what was truly important to me & beyond being with those I love, it was to do what I love… today, now, because tomorrow is promised to no one.

Yet I paint soooooooooo slowly, with the tiniest paint brush possible to create as much detail as possible to the point that I realize I am barely breathing sometimes.

I realize I need to find a way to make my process more joyful, more playful, to let go a little of the analytical Virgo in me & so yesterday I joined my sweet friend@honeybeetemple ‘s the Joy of Watercolors: Painting with the Ancient Child class to find more joy & play & freedom in my creative process.

I am so curious to see what is created when I let go a little & allow more playfulness…✨

2024… a new beginning ✨

I have been on a healing journey this last year after discovering a heart issue a year ago today that at first I thought may require heart surgery. I had never had anything come up with my heart before so finding out about this came as a complete surprise. I had never given my heart more than a moments thought & took for granted all that it does… beating every moment, every day of my life, for all that it feels, for all of the love that it holds.

In a moment, everything that is truly important became crystal clear, gratitude for my life, for this moment… because it’s all we really have. I felt a calm quietness within myself & more present in my heart that I had ever done before.

I decided that no matter what happened, I would choose to see this new knowledge as a gift… a gift to know now & make life choices that support my heart, a gift to have brought into focus what is truly important & what I really want for my life, to let go of anything that is not important, a gift to listen to my heart, to really live from the heart.

In the end it was decided I don’t need surgery at the moment for which I am so grateful, yet I am perhaps even more grateful for the change within myself, to know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I must listen to my heart & let it lead.

And so last year was a healing journey, one that continues. Sometimes it is easy to forget, to fall into old habits & patterns & in those moments I must bring myself back to my breath, back to the moment, back to my heart… like a meditation. I know that it is from this moment that I create my reality & so my intention this year is to follow my heart & CREATE. What do I want to create for my life & in this world? What do you want to create for your life & in this world?

Life is precious & fragile & I hope this inspires you to take a moment to hold your heart, say thank you & listen to what it really needs & wants & to follow it… ❤️

Finally…. six months ago, on the eve of the summer solstice, two years late & almost not at all because we caught bloody covid the week before, but in the eleventh hour… all of our loved ones & angels & ancestors & elemental beings came together & the clouds parted, the sun broke through & shone down upon us & their was a full rainbow across the sky. It was, in the end, the most magical day we could ever have dreamt of… truly a mid-summer nights dream in the most magical place where we fell in love eight years ago.

It seems impossible that it was a half a year ago already, it feels like yesterday…we only wish we could relive every moment with each and every one of you who made it there from near & far. Thank you for celebrating with us!

Finally…. six months ago, on the eve of the summer solstice, two years late & almost not at all because we caught bloody covid the week before, but in the eleventh hour… all of our loved ones & angels & ancestors & elemental beings came together & the clouds parted, the sun broke through & shone down upon us & their was a full rainbow across the sky. It was, in the end, the most magical day we could ever have dreamt of… truly a mid-summer nights dream in the most magical place where we fell in love eight years ago.
