// I think in terms of boxes that ooze. Information gets held somewhere, seeps out, overlaps with what’s around it, and stays contained until it doesn’t. Goo is the clearest way I’ve found to share this way of engaging with things as they change, so I wrote a short essay and made a simple interactive to go with it.
.
You can read or listen to the essay on Substack, and play the interactive on Itch.io. Links in bio. 🧫

Inspired by looking through a glass lens.

// Making this piece reminded me that GIFs are hands-down my favorite file format for glitching . Their built-in restrictions and dithering create artifacts that feel like digital fuzz, and when you pair that with their frame-by-frame structure, how could they not be my favorite? In this piece I'm merely playing with the color index of my animated work, then editing further as a video--- but there's so much more room for play with GIFs, and they're a very forgiving format.
.
An early encounter that still inspires me and confirms my bias happened in 2016, when I got to participate in stAllio!'s workshop "hacking the gif" during the RE:MESH.WWWERK/s events curated by @joncates. I wasn't living in Chicago yet, was only a couple years into making unstable media myself, and had just met jon. Getting to meet stAllio!—whose early tutorials taught me about sonification (glitching via audio software)—and learning from them in-person about glitching GIFs was an affirmation that what I was starting to devote myself to existed, and at the time I knew very little about it or about glitching GIFs 😅

// With another year around the sun, I’m finally sharing my thesis, 𝘎𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘤𝘩 𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘺, https://archive.org/details/glitch_play
(Link in bio.)
.
// A gift from me to you on my 34th year of life. ✨️
.
// It still feels a little unreal that I got to research, and ultimately build an exhibition around, engaging with glitches as an act of play. Writing about so many Glitch artists I deeply admire, while weaving together the histories of Glitch Art and video games, was genuinely magical. The thesis and the accompanying 𝘎𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘤𝘩’𝘕’𝘎𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘴 exhibition were shaped by more people than I can name here, but they’re all present in these pages.
.
// There’s something strange and grounding about finishing a long, all-consuming project and later realizing it’s also a partial record of who you were at that moment. Reading it now, I see a version of myself—my voice, interests, and style—that continues to evolve. Still, this work remains a pillar of focused passion, an accumulation of years of curiosity and effort. I’m proud of it, and grateful I got to make it my master’s thesis. If you read it, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

// This year I had the joy of taking part in two video synthesis/art expos, and it has been electrifying.⚡
.
First: the two-day Video Artists Conclave here in Pittsburgh (huge thanks to @andrei_jay_video_wizard , @scobi_hotel , @tech25pgh , and @studioforcreativeinquiry ). I finally showcased my UE Colour Organ, along with an interactive Colour Lamp built specifically for the event.

Second: the three-day Video Sync in Portland, OR, organized by Andrei and the @synthlibraryportland . I represented Glitch Artists Collective, featuring works by @joncates , @rdklinc , and @trizzytrunk.
.
Both gatherings were a specific kind of magic --- meeting artists I’ve admired for years, reconnecting with old friends, and hanging out with people who want to create, experiment, and make wild, beautiful things happen.

// Last week marked my final days at Pins --- becoming a game tech had felt like stepping into a dream, but that's not all i was and most of my energy went into other responsibilities that kept multiplying without reciprocation, inside a system where profit eclipses everything else.
.
// This past year i was beyond full-time at work, finished a degree, was made heartbroken, put together an exhibition, mourned the death of someone i once envisioned a life with, began a new job at the Children’s Museum, and through it all and more, slowly lost track of myself. There were days when the self i'm supposedly protecting felt like a rumor. Leaving this security behind is terrifying, but the cost of staying---time, joy, clarity---aren't things that can be earned back.
.
// My compass has always pointed toward integrity. If the shape of my life begins to feel off-center, i walk. Not because it's easy, but because i simply must. --- i'm so far from flawless, but i do try to be faithful to how i believe i desire to exist in this world. There are people i want to be better to, share a steadier presence with... including myself. What else is a life for, if not that? It does not last forever and so many lose it too soon.
.
// So here i am: uncertain, anxious, but alive and hopeful. Hoping to find closer alignment and continue building there, even if it takes some time. There’s still so much to do, and i remain foolish enough to believe it can be done with purpose and sincerity, not just performance. There are others living with such true intention and they keep me inspired.
.
// wish me luck --- i'll be wishing the same for you.

// Ever since i learned about a three-way handshake years ago, i've often imagined connection as the mutual acknowledgment of one another’s sins and the willingness to engage anyway. A shared protocol of entanglement, human or otherwise: we meet with our faults in our hands.

// i've been getting to be creative lately, but not expressive—time hasn’t allowed for longer meditations, like animations, so i suspect there are more drawings & poems ahead for a bit.
.
// it seems i keep finding myself in some rhythm—a pattern of connections which light up briefly, then drift again, slipping away with meaning.
.
// strange, how deeper & more final currents pull around me, yet their depths are such that i can only feel them.
.
//stranger still, how much i love to be alive even in heavy tides—a joy i carry in action but rarely know how to express in other forms.

// The conversations i had with Croatian artists Dina Karadžić & Vedran Gligo, alongside Brazilian new media artist Sabato Visconti, back in 2022, was the beginning of me realizing the importance of documenting the interactions of the communities i have the privilege to be a part of, and the importance of conversation in general.
.
// These animations were created during an independent study with @glitcharts , & it was hard to figure out what it was i wanted to do for my visual project-- i just knew i wanted to talk to some people who inspire me, about things i felt they would have good insight on. In listening to the recordings of the conversations, there were moments that stood out to me & i decided to capture them as rotoscoped animations, employing glitch techniques that i felt aligned with what was being said.
.
// you can find the text scripts of these conversations & others via my website. // i will continue this project, probably slowly forever, so please reach out if you are interested. You do not need to be an artist, just passionate and knowledgeable about your passion.
