Pictura Vincit Omnia, oil on paper, 40cm x 55cm

Painting Conquers All or Art Triumphant.

A response to seeing Caravaggio's Amor Vincit Omnia at @wallacemuseum earlier this year.

This work is my expression of how painting has given me joy, expression and new purpose.

As always an experiment in light, and choices of detail.

The paintings behind the figure are details from The Sacrifice of Isaac, Juan de Valdes Leal (Nation Gallery London) and indeed from the original Amor Vincit Omnia by Caravaggio, each providing (both metaphorically and literally) wings to art.

Huge thanks to the wonderful and highly recommended @cal_lifemodel for finding and maintaining this pose. It was such a joy to work with you. The human connection of working with generous and collaborative models is not the least of the joy of my practice.

Charlie, oil on paper, 40cm x 29cm

A sketch of the remarkable Charlie in preparation for a full (though very different) painting.. or more.

I enjoyed the fantastic range of warm tones in Charlie's beautiful skin - even if my rendering of them is not literal.

Watch this space for more!

Helios Observes with Pity. Oil on paper,40cm x 55cm

Helios, titan and sun god, sees everything that happens on earth (famously he was the only one who saw and therefore knew what became of Persephone when she was abducted by Hades) and looks on our troubled world with sorrow and regret.

I've reintroduced some angularity to this painting of the very beautiful @justdusu - echoing his wonderful lines.

Madame D (Rococo Fantasy), oil on paper laid on board. 57.5cm x 57.5cm

Voyages in art history. This painting of the creative, funny, charming and very beautiful @danielmcilwraith emerged from a conversation about representation, ideas of beauty and masculinity.

I love the juxtaposition of Daniel's strong, gym-toned physique and the delicate lace and florals of the lingerie.

The setting is inspired, and in part borrowed from, François Boucher's famous painting of Madame de Pompadour now in Munich but which had stayed with me since I saw it in person at the National Gallery's Pompadour exhibition "Portrait of a Mistress" in 2002.

It has been a departure, but a very enjoyable one, to paint clothing! The lace and mesh of the lingerie bring a joyous contrast texture and brings out the blues and pinks in Daniel's fine, fair complexion.

The props in the painting are both real and imagined. I enjoy reusing elements from previous paintings to create a sense of the continuity of the creative process.
Madame D is a patron of the arts and can be seen holding a collectable 'Zine by the inspirational @oliraptor

An Allegory of Architecture
(A Portrait of Jonathan Chan in an interior by Filippo Brunelleschi)
Oil on paper, 57.5cm x 57.5cm

Part of my Modern Liberal Arts series.

I have been wanting to paint architect, and inspirational painter, @jonathanchanpainting for some time, andmy Modern Liberal Arts series was the hook needed.
I asked Jonathan his thoughts on the pictorial symbols of Architecture and his immediate response was "columns and arches". I took this idea and imagined a setting by Brunelleschi designer of the dome of Florence cathedral and a founder of linear perspective. The lines of the church interior combine with those of the minimal black leather armchair to create a subdued drama as a backdrop to the refined elegance of the figure of Jonathan himself.

I hope I have captured a little of Jonathan's calm, kind, gentle beauty.
There is something of the Renaissance saint that has emerged.. perhaps revealing my veneration of this special, talented soul.

Still life (Wedgwood blue Jasperware). 15cm x 10cm

PRIVATE COLLECTION

A postcard sized still life. I enjoy painting small items from my collection in the backgrounds of my figurative work. I thought it would be fun to paint a few items as still lives.

Wedgwood blues are so famous.. it was an interesting challenge to try and conjour those particular hues.

And safe subjects for all environments!

The Offering of the Dioskouri.Oil on paper laid on board. 57.5cm x 57.5cm

The divine twins, Kastor and Polydeuces (Castor and Pollux to the Romans) were the brothers of Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra.

Despite one being mortal and one being immortal, they were devoted to one another. When Kastor was killed, Zeus gave Polydeuces the choice between spending all his time on Olympus or giving half of his immortality to his mortal brother, so that they could alternate realms together. Polydeuces elected to share his immortality.

Huge thanks to the remarkable @finnxlewis for recreating the pose of each twin. Your professionalism, poise and beauty were essential.
I have taken liberties with Finn's tattoos. I have shared them between the brothers as an indication of twin souls in separate physical forms.

My rendering of "Castor and Pollux" is inspired by the marble statue of them in the sculpture court of the V&A museum, London (last picture).
"This marble group is a close copy of a heavily restored antique group originally excavated in Rome (it was recorded in the Ludovisi Collection in 1623), and later in the collection of Queen Christina of Sweden in Rome. The antique group was sold to Philip V of Spain in 1724, and is now in the Prado, Madrid. Joseph Nollekens (1737-1823) probably made his marble version from the plaster copy kept at the French Academy in Rome."

The arcadian landscape in which the brothers stand, is inspired by a landscape by Nicolas Poussin of St John on Patmos.

"Finn", oil on paper, 20cm x 20cm

SOLD: Private Collection (USA)

A sketch in consideration of a larger painting in my Scenes from Balzac series. Our hero waits, reflecting on what has passed, and what is to come.

I find the diagonal composition very satisfying.

A small portrait sketch of the remarkable and charming @finnxlewis.

An Allegory of the impermanence of Youth. Oil on paper laid on board. 57.5cm x 57.5cm

Youthful Beauty seeks to Restrain Time.

Various levels of detail. I've painted my early 18th century French Boulle clock with an almost pointilllist method which gives a pleasing soft focus (when viewing the painting in person).

I hope I've captured something of the classic beauty and golden bronze skin tones of the wonderful @cal_lifemodel who was an absolute joy to work with (and highly recommended)

Truth Reflected, oil on paper laid on hardboard, 92cm x 54cm

An allegory of modern living. Our protagonist sits in a square seat in a monchrome world - the mundanity of modern, urban life; but his reflection shows us his interior life.
A life of richness, colour, love, and the promordial forces of nature . A world of freedom; a world of possibilities.

Note: The image in the reflection is my take on Francois Boucher's 'Pan and Syrinx' in the @nationalgallery London.

To me, there is something of the Belle Epoch about the feeling of this piece.

Special thanks to the rather wonderful @axel99432 for an inspirational sitting.
