Atlanta is a city under constant watch.

Over the past 20 years, it has quietly built itself into what local researchers call a “city of cameras” that are surveilling neighborhoods with artificial intelligence.

“Just knowing the history of this country [and] the history of profiling, I do have concerns and questions about how this AI [is being used],” said Brian Page, a local resident. “I don’t trust them to have the information or collect it.”

For residents like Page, Atlanta’s transformation started long before the cameras and cables went live. It started when the trees of the Welaunee Forest came down to build a police training center known as “Cop City” on its ruins.

@adamlmahoney and @madeline_reporter report on Atlanta’s rise in AI policing and its environmental impacts for Peace & Riot’s AI issue.

Folks won't stop until they STOP the multimillion Cop City that CPCC wants to build with Meck taxes.

To win, organizers need to target the people, places, and groups that are close to this project. YOU DO NOT NEED ANYONE'S PERMISSION TO STOP COP CITY!

- Contractor sametcorp: Running the bids for Cop City. CEO: Arthur Samet. Pres.: Rick Davenport
- @hendrickcars: Can take away the gift of land, really wants a Cop City, loves ICE

- @mecklenburgcounty Manager Mike Bryant: Can change the county budget to defund Cop City
- Meck County Board Chair @mark4thepeople: Runs the county budget, can defund $116 million
- @townofmatthews: Control zoning and permits for project

- @centralpiedmontcc Pres. Kandi Deitemeyer: Main pusher of this project. Her mouthpiece: Catherine Butler
- CPCC Board Chair Caldwell Rose (@sre_cre): Main decision makers at CPCC
- CPCC Foundation: Supposed to fundraise at least $2m for project

- Levine Campus Woods: The site of the project
- @levinemchs: High school on Levine Campus, would suffer firsthand impact of Cop City

Happy Birthday Tortuguita. 🐢🌱

Today would have been their 30th birthday.
Instead, they were killed by the Georgia State Patrol while defending the forest, the first murder of an environmental activist in the US.

Yesterday, on Earth Day, our community came together on the Jackson Street Bridge to honor Tortuguita’s life and all those taken by state violence. What we created together was powerful.

We fed our neighbors. We distributed care packages. We made art, played music, danced, and reclaimed space under the Atlanta skyline.

It was an act of resistance. An act of love. A glimpse of the world we all believe in, one rooted in community care.

So many people made it possible - donating supplies, cooking food, building the space, showing up with intention and care. Deep gratitude to everyone who contributed. We were especially honored to be joined by Tortuguita’s mother, @belkisteran27 and loved ones.

As the city of Atlanta prepares for increased policing and global attention with the World Cup, we’re reminded that the struggle continues and that it’s on us to keep each other safe.

The celebration continues.

This Sunday, April 26th at 2PM at Brownwood Park for Tortuguita’s birthday celebration ! A day of community, music, remembrance, and organizing.

Bring something to share. Bring a friend.
Let’s show up for each other the way Tortuguita did.

Join us for the community celebration of the life of Tortuguita with the Weelaunee Coalition and friends on Sunday, April 26th, 2-5pm. Tortuguita was an indigenous queer forest defender, and abolitionist, anarchist, medic and friend to everyone they met. They joined the movement to stop cop city because they believed deeply in a reimagined future with no police, no jails, abundant resources for all, and a profound respect for nature. They were assassinated by Georgia State Police while defending the Weelaunee Forest on January 2023.

Let’s celebrate their life as a community and all the martyrs and our politicalprisoners.

What to Bring?
Blanket, water bottles, items for the altar and something you want screen printed. There will be a clothing and book swap! Bring books and clothing you wish to give away!

We’ll have food, music, games, and more family-friendly fun ✨

Illustration and artwork by @noahgrigni
Thank you❤️

Tortuguita would be turning 30 this year.

To celebrate, we’re honoring their birthday the way they lived— through community, care, and collective action.

Tortuguita was an Indigenous, queer forest defender, abolitionist, medic, and friend. They believed in a world without police or prisons, a world rooted in care, dignity, and deep respect for the land.

They were killed by the Georgia State Patrol in January 2023. We carry them with us, not just in grief, but in how we show up.

Next week, we gather to celebrate their life:

🖤 April 22 | 6PM
Everybody Eats Block Party
📍 Jackson St Bridge

🐢April 25 | 2PM
Birthday Celebration
📍 Brownwood Park

We’ll be feeding our neighbors, distributing care packages, sharing music, and celebrating a life that continues to move us.

We also lift up Cornelius Taylor who was killed nearby while unhoused. These stories are connected. This is why we fight.

💥 We need donations + volunteers to make this happen
🔗 bit.ly/everybodyeatsapril (link in bio)

Come through. Bring a friend. Show up for each other.

Tortuguita vive. La lucha sigue. 🐢

We stand in UNCONDITIONAL and UNEQUIVOCAL solidarity with our comrade, JAKHI MCCRAY, who TODAY, at the age of 22, signed a non-cooperating plea deal for the burning of 11 NYPD cars.

Revolutionaries like Jakhi teach us what it means to be brave & principled in the face of undeniable imperial evil, and we will NEVER abandon him or any other comrade held prisoner by the state.

REPRESSION BREEDS RESISTANCE! And the state has yet AGAIN failed to divide us, to instigate fear or to destroy the fire we MUST kindle in order to achieve total freedom.

SWIPE TO THE LAST SLIDE to take action to support Jakhi—we need you to PLUG IN as we collectively stand with our political prisoners.

International day of solidarity with the Prairieland defendants. On March 13, 9 defendants were found guilty on most counts during the Prarieland trial. They are all facing decades in prison. Show solidarity with these defendants by hosting letter writing nights, info sessions, noise demos, and fundraisers on April 4. We have a long journey ahead of us to continue fighting these charges. What happens here sets the tone for what's to come. We are here and we won't give up!
