There are so many things tied to the making of this video that feel deeply special to me. In December last year, I finished writing the bare bones of a collection of poetry and prose that lives in a very emotional and vulnerable place within me, and I guess, like many things in art, it felt like survival. It’s called Houses For Feelings.
I always imagined that bringing my writing into one cohesive body of work would feel chaotic, to say the least, because like my mind, it tends to exist in fragments,very scattered and ever shifting.But somehow, this came together with such ease, as if it had already taken shape long before I realised I was making anything at all.For most of my life, poetry has lived privately within me ,in my notebooks or in my iPhone notes inside the walls of my house and almost never shared with anyone in real life. Until last winter in London, I had never spoken my words out loud, never read a poem in my own voice.
As I began thinking of ways to share this work, I felt an undeniable pull to place my words into the world,
to print them, to speak them, to put them in letters and post-its and anything tactile and real, to let them exist physically in front of me, and most importantly, outside of a screen.
I was deeply moved and nourished by the poetry scene in London, and by the strangers who welcomed me into it.
It felt like something small and sacred to witness so many other writers speak their words within a kind of intimacy that feels so vibrant and contagious,where phones disappear,
and the magic of presence is preserved,and strangers gather at night to share their lives through words, spoken aloud, in beating bodies of flesh and blood.

Following this pull, on Valentine’s Day I printed around 40 posters with fragments from my book and pasted them around South and East London.

This video is a visual project in support of my upcoming book,which I’m still unsure how it will find its final form in the world.But if you’d like to support me for now, you can follow along @thestephaniearchivesand stay close.

This poem is short and simple. I wrote it about a year and a half ago while walking my dog—Joy Division was playing, and I quickly typed it into my notes. A year later, I found it again, only to realize how much it had predicted what was to come. I wanted to experiment with editing a fast, textured sequence of images and sounds—like a glimpse into, sometimes, my own head.
