Literary agent at Writers House and children's book author at his apartment

This picture book @steveteare and I made came out on Tuesday! The amount of hide and seek I played with my son in our apartment in 2020 couldn’t even fit into sixteen books, but SIXTEEN GAMES OF HIDE AND SEEK definitely gets at the heart of it, and is my ode to (arguably!) the greatest, most infinite and available and mysterious game of all time, and to the people I most love playing it with : )
Suffice it to say, it’s not a passing fancy (I think I compulsively play it?) and watching a ridiculously talented and surprising and hilarious artist like Steve put the game on paper was a true joy (he’s been an illustrator forever but this is his first picture book!) Then there are the masterminds, @taylornorm and @brownie_girl_42 who somehow instantly knew where all the right ideas were hiding, but let us keep playing for as long as we wanted, anyway.
A massive thank you to @holidayhousepeachtree and @mothwench and @anna.gj.abell, to @elenagiovinazzo and @julia.ermi at @heirloom_literary, and most of all to @janesomething and my kiddos, for whom I would count to a zillion.

Hello, my name is Anna Walker @_annawalker_. This week I’m stepping into Walker Picture Books insta to share the making of my new picture book The Dream Keeper. As way of introduction… I’m an author/illustrator and work in a beautiful studio @abbotsfordconvent in Melbourne, Australia. I’m good at finding feathers. I laugh easily and cry easily. My favourite song right now is Memphis Soul Stew. I have an orange every day. I like making things. Sometimes when I’m alone in the studio I practise tap.
Usually, it takes me one or two years to make a picture book, but The Dream Keeper took seven years, and in the last two of those years I was lucky to work with Alice Dawes @alice.dawzy and Beth Aves at @walkerpicturebooks. AND lucky from the beginning that @stephenbarr (my agent) believed in the splash of a rowboat and a dream with unwavering support.
Let the turtle games begin!
ps. Thank you @jessicatremp for the photos of The Dream Keeper and me at the studio!

Hey, it’s finally Earth Day! I can think of no better way to celebrate than Stephen Barr and AG Ford’s exuberant homage to this exceptional planet involving an entire classroom of kids, a very busy recess, a bully from the big kid yard, the “good ball,” playground romance, a continually missing shoe, a scheming misanthropist with a heart of gold, an extended series of intuitive and hilarious metaphors from the world’s greatest metaphorian (Stephen), a ridiculously gorgeous tree, lots of highly accurate crosstalk, and the most beautiful artwork AG has ever created. It culminates in a call to action to love our planet by taking care of it, just the way it does us, but conveyed in a way that’s like the West Wing meets (***classic***) Sesame Street meets Frindle. I hope that’ll do Earth proud!

Two Steves will be joining forces next month at the wonderful @booksofwonder to launch our forthcoming book Sixteen Games of Hide and Seek! For the Steve writing this caption, it will be a debut launch party for a debut picture book.
Join us for a reading, for drawing activities, and at least one song related to hiding/seeking!

Play is how children make sense of the world, and hide and seek is no exception. Readers of any generation will immediately recognize the negotiations that go on in this family’s games: Dad should seek, but shouldn’t find his son, Ro, too fast. Siblings always spill the beans if they see you hiding. And no one is as good a finder as Mom.
But sometimes you find a hiding place that is really, really hidden. And if a loud storm kicks up outside, seeming to hiss your name, you might wonder whether Dad will ever find you. Is he even still looking?
SIXTEEN GAMES OF HIDE AND SEEK is a funny, relatable picture book that feels like a reassuring hug. Little readers and parents alike will laugh their way through this endearing story about everyone's favorite rainy day game.
Find SIXTEEN GAMES OF HIDE AND SEEK on shelves May 12th!

Recess is wholly transformed when Omeed holds up an orange and asks one question: “What if this were the world?”🌎️🍊🌳
The students' imaginations soar as they search for the perfect world, only to realize that perhaps there’s just one world that truly checks all the boxes—a place where everyone belongs and their needs are met. In the end, they discover it might be time to take better care of the world they already have.
IF THIS WERE THE WORLD is a vividly-colored, witty picture book, combining humor and a message about protecting our planet. Find it on shelves wherever you buy books!

In the end, they discover it might be time to take better care of the world they already have.
IF THIS WERE THE WORLD is a vividly-colored, witty picture book, combining humor and a message about protecting our planet. Find it on shelves wherever you buy books!

@agfordart and I made a picture book (edited by the incomparable @taylornorm) and it publishes next month, on February 17th! I don’t know which flat surface in my apartment best complements AG’s righteous cover art, so here’s all of them??? It’s the story of the kids in Ms. Lee’s class realizing they’ve already played every single game they could possibly think of, until a boy takes an orange out of his lunch bag and says, “What if THIS were the world?” Then they play their butts off (even if it sometimes feels a little more high stakes than your average patty cake : )
I’ll share more soon (it got three starred reviews! I’ll be reading at Books Are Magic on February 22nd! I based most of the characters on the coolest kids I knew in 3rd grade!) but for now I just want to say a colossal thanks to AG and Taylor and @elenagiovinazzo and @holidayhousepeachtree for making the process (and the book) feel like one gigantic recess : )
