At Steinberg Hart, we believe great design should be accessible to everyone. Affordable housing is more than just delivering units — it is about responding to one of the most fundamental human needs: having a safe, stable place to call home. It is a responsibility we embrace with purpose and passion because housing has the power to strengthen communities, create opportunity, and support upward mobility for individuals and families across generations.
Our approach goes beyond creating places to live — it seeks to foster inclusive, equitable environments that promote connection, well-being, educational success, economic opportunity, and a stronger sense of belonging. We believe thoughtful design can actively support healthier, more resilient communities and create pathways for people to thrive.
This Affordable Housing Month, we recognize the collective effort it takes to create affordable housing — from developers and designers to public agencies and community leaders and stakeholders. Housing and architecture have the ability to shape people’s lives both actively and passively, influencing dignity, stability, access, and opportunity every day. We’re proud to be part of that effort, helping shape communities that support exploration, transformation, and long-term opportunity for all.

Steinberg Hart is proud to share the unveiling of design plans for Phase II of the historic Stevens Center renovation in partnership with the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and Jenkins Peer Architects.
Phase 2 will complete the renovation of the beloved performing arts center and learning laboratory, preserving its legacy as an anchor for the arts in the Triad, and transforming it into a world-class venue for audiences and students of today and into the future. From a reconfigured balcony with enhanced sightlines to upgraded acoustics, staging, and patron experience, the design reflects a balance of legacy and innovation — ensuring the Stevens Center remains a cultural anchor and catalyst for downtown Winston-Salem.
“The Stevens Center has served the UNCSA community, Winston-Salem, and the wider region as a teaching facility, professional performing arts venue, and major cultural destination for almost 45 years. As the building itself nears its centennial, the second phase of the Stevens Center renovation prepares for the next 100 years,” said Steinberg Hart principal Evan Delli Paoli, AIA. “The design enhances the original building's unique neoclassical features through juxtaposition with new design elements that heighten the immediacy between audience and performer, integrate new performance technologies, and create a unifying space for all to share in the experience together.”
Plans released today are the result of a two-year advance planning and design development period. Construction on Phase 2 will begin in February 2027 with the Stevens Center reopening in 2029.
We’re honored to collaborate with UNCSA and the broader community on this transformative project that brings together education, performance, and civic life.
Congratulations to our valued clients and partners!

This Earth Week, we’re highlighting Habitat — a next-generation, sustainable live-work-thrive community in Los Angeles.
At its core, Habitat is designed to reconnect people with nature in an urban environment. Through terraced massing, integrated landscaping, and seamless indoor-outdoor spaces, the project embraces Southern California’s climate while creating a dynamic, nature-connected experience.
Sustainability is embedded at every level. Habitat targets LEED Gold for residential and LEED Platinum for commercial, incorporating strategies such as low-carbon concrete, solar energy systems, water-efficient landscaping, on-site stormwater management, and maximized natural light to reduce environmental impact.
Beyond performance, the design prioritizes wellness and community—integrating parks, walking trails, garden terraces, and outdoor gathering spaces that promote a healthier, more connected way of living.

In honor of Earth Day, we’d like to highlight the UCLA Hitch Student Residences.
Originally an aging housing complex, Hitch was transformed into a vibrant, sustainable student community—reimagining four residential buildings organized around a network of courtyards and a new commons building that anchors shared amenities and student life.
The project addressed critical life-safety and accessibility upgrades, while also enhancing energy performance through a renewed building envelope and updated interiors. A new commons building provides study spaces, community gathering areas, and a multipurpose room—supporting both academic and social engagement.
Thoughtful site design, including sloped walkways and integrated landscaping, connects outdoor spaces and strengthens a sense of community across the hillside campus.
Today, Hitch Suites stands as a socially vibrant, sustainable living environment, designed to support student connection, wellness, and long-term campus life.
Happy Earth Day!

To kick off Earth Week, we’re proud to highlight the Undergraduate Teaching and Learning Facility (UTLF) at University of California, Riverside. Designed as a truly interdisciplinary hub and targeting LEED Gold, UTLF brings together the College of Natural & Agricultural Sciences, the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, and the UCR Bourns College of Engineering. The design team strategy was inspired by Associate Provost and Chief of Staff Ken Baerenklau’s ambition that the building encourage “science students to take a dance class, and dance students to take a science class,” — creating new opportunities for collaboration, discovery, and shared learning.
Our design optimizes solar orientation for energy efficiency, and access to daylight and views. The reinforced concrete structure with strategic placement of shear-walls promotes longevity and flexibility for future program adaptations while using low carbon Type 1L concrete. The building features an 80kW PV shade canopy at the outdoor Dance pavilion.

Today, we celebrated the official opening of San Jose City College's (SJCC) new Career Education Complex. The project represents a significant institutional investment in trade education, placing career-focused programs at the physical and symbolic center of the SJCC campus within a facility designed to reflect the sophistication and rigor of the work being taught.
The complex brings together a new 90,000 SF facility and a 30,000 SF renovated existing structure, organized around a landscaped courtyard and industrial teaching yard where students in building trades can work at full scale.
Emerging from SJCC's mission to strengthen its role as a workforce development engine for Silicon Valley, the project housed a total of 15 different departments and consolidates previously scattered health sciences, business, and computer information systems, skilled trades labs, and campus IT within a single interconnected site.
“Our goal was to design a space where people from all different backgrounds can come together and take part in the shared experience of life-long learning,” said Katia McClain, Partner at Steinberg Hart. “The complex represents a new model for education—strengthening the region and State’s focus on workforce development and technical training, while giving students the tools, exposure, and confidence to translate learning into meaningful careers."

For almost 25 years, Vikas has served as a key resource in sustainable design, guiding the firm’s design teams as well as providing technical support for implementation. As an Associate Principal, his mentorship and leadership were essential to the success of Steinberg Hart’s Sustainability Accreditation Program, which has led to over 50% of the firm’s design staff achieving one or more sustainability accreditations.

In celebration of International Children’s Book Day, we’re highlighting the Lenexa Public Library — a space designed to support imagination, curiosity, and a lifelong love of reading.
At the heart of the library is a vibrant, light-filled children’s area that invites exploration through playful design, flexible spaces, and moments of discovery at every scale. From storytelling corners to interactive learning zones, the environment supports both quiet reading and active engagement.
The library engages the community with an open, welcoming design; the commons visually connects to the civic plaza, street, and public market. Thirty-foot-high windows allow for connectivity between the outdoor plaza and library patrons. Plaza-grey Kansas limestone, black locust wood, and reclaimed barn wood pay homage to the library’s Kansas roots.

Steinberg Hart is proud to celebrate the topping out of the Saban Center, the first-of-its-kind learning campus for STEM and the arts currently taking shape in Tuscaloosa’s River District.
Set to open in 2027, the 118,000 SF project will bring education, creativity, and community together under one roof, advancing the Sabans' vision for a destination that expands educational and economic opportunity for young people and families across Alabama. Saban Center’s innovative campus will house the State of Alabama STEM Hub, the Tuscaloosa Children's Theatre and IGNITE, formerly the Children’s Hands-On Museum. At the Saban Center, arts, education, discovery and innovation come together to prepare the workforce of the future.
"Saban Center is deeply personal to us—we've been involved every step of the way, working closely with the design team to shape a place where children of all ages can explore their curiosity and imagine what's possible for their futures," said Nick and Terry Saban. "We're thrilled to see this vision materializing in the heart of Tuscaloosa, and can’t wait to see the next generation of Alabama's leaders, makers, and dreamers make it their own."
Envisioned as a resource for students and educators alike, the campus will offer hands-on learning experiences, STEM labs and exhibits aligned with Alabama's educational priorities, and professional development opportunities designed to support teachers and strengthen workforce pathways statewide.
“The design of the Saban Center reflects a shared belief that architecture can actively support learning and discovery. Every element, including an intentional intertwining of locally sourced, recognizable materials, was conceived to create an environment for inquisition and connection rooted in the community of Tuscaloosa,” said Malcolm Holzman, Partner at Steinberg Hart. “The design of an ambitious project that will truly advance education in Alabama was only made possible through genuine collaboration with Davis Architects, the State of Alabama, the City of Tuscaloosa, and the Saban family.”
Congratulations to our valued clients and partners on this major
construction milestone!

Today we celebrated the groundbreaking of ESSENSE 501, a vibrant, pedestrian-oriented wellness community at the gateway between Chinatown and Downtown Los Angeles. Located in a historic neighborhood, the highly sustainable project will include market-rate and affordable housing, an outpatient medical facility, ground-floor retail, and new plazas and walkways that reconnect parts of the neighborhood while creating a gathering space for the community. Designated as one of the first Olympic-related projects ahead of the LA 2028 Olympic Games, ESSENSE 501 will first make its debut as the Nordic ESSENSE House, an independent initiative during the 2028 Summer Games that will serve as a flagship destination for Nordic nations and brands to showcase sport, design, and culture. The versatile use of this development is envisioned not as a momentary Olympic backdrop, but as a lasting community asset that will serve the Chinatown community for generations, and model thoughtful urban development for the Los Angeles area.
Congratulations to our clients and partners at AGI Avant Group and 531 W. College Street, LLC.
