President Donald Trump endorsed Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton Tuesday, dealing a blow to U.S. Sen. John Cornyn’s reelection bid just days before early voting starts in their high-stakes primary runoff.

"Ken is a true MAGA Warrior who has ALWAYS delivered for Texas, and will continue to do so in the United States Senate," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "John Cornyn is a good man, and I worked well with him, but he was not supportive of me when times were tough."

Republicans on both sides of the race have been urging Trump for months to jump in with an endorsement, arguing in part that a drawn out primary fight would only help the Democratic nominee, state Rep. James Talarico. But the president resisted, even after Cornyn delivered a stronger-than-expected showing in the March primary.

The new Paseo residential tower reflects the rapid reinvention of Austin’s Rainey Street district.

The first thing you notice from the 48th floor is the silence. The glass seals out the noise of Rainey Street — the bachelorette party buses, the construction, the rhythm of a neighborhood under development — and what remains is the hush of luxury. A tub positioned toward Lady Bird Lake. Marble counters without fingerprints. A wraparound terrace.

At Paseo, the residential tower rising over Rainey Street, luxury is being sold as insulation: from inconvenience, from friction, from the pressures of city life.

“Life, all in. On Rainey Street,” the branding promises, though the reality inside the building feels almost detached from the street below.

What was once a Mexican American neighborhood, a pocket of bungalows and nightlife, has become a vertical district of glass towers and private lounges.

Three suspects in a terrifying string of shootings with no clear motive put an entire city on edge this past weekend: Four people were wounded by gunfire, and as the manhunt intensified, much of South Austin was under a shelter-in-place order for more than an hour Sunday afternoon.

We are grateful for the exhaustive law enforcement response — led by the Austin Police Department and supported by numerous agencies — that culminated with authorities arresting two teens in Manor on Sunday afternoon, then capturing the final fugitive that night.

Even before that final arrest was made, however, the frightening ordeal had rekindled the debate over whether Austin police should have access to automated license plate readers, powerful technology that is useful for the same reason it is deeply concerning: It allows authorities to track people’s movements.

It’s understandable that Austinites shaken by this weekend’s violence may find such tools appealing. But moments of public fear are precisely when cities should pause and think most carefully before expanding surveillance powers.

Driskill Grill in Austin reopens Monday after a complete renovation that returns the restaurant, which opened in 1930, to its original glory. The sprawling but intimate steakhouse, finished in unlacquered brass and walnut burl paneling, is lined with classic Texas art, taxidermy and photos that reveal the restaurant and hotel’s importance in Austin’s social history.

One of the teenagers arrested after a weekend of shootings, stolen vehicles and a regionwide manhunt has been identified as 17-year-old Cristian Mondragon, according to sources close to the investigation.

Mondragon is charged with aggravated assault with a motor vehicle, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and evading arrest with a vehicle.

Sources close to the investigation said a warrant had been issued for Mondragon’s arrest in recent months but could not elaborate on the details because Mondragon was underage at the time.

Austin police say two suspects are in custody in connection with a string of at least nine shooting incidents throughout Austin over the weekend.

The search for an additional suspect has prompted a heavy law enforcement presence in Manor, including the issuance of a shelter-in-place for the following areas:

Ralph Ritchie and Suncrest Road
N FM 973 near Suncrest Road and Tower Road
Presidential Meadows subdivision
Greenbury subdivision
Stonewater subdivision

The shelter-in-place directive originally issued for a large section of South Austin has been cancelled, according to Austin police.

Hundreds of Texas State University graduates celebrated after commencement ceremonies Thursday with a jump into the San Marcos River, continuing one of the school’s best-known traditions.

Students gathered in Sewell Park, many still wearing caps, gowns and cords as friends and family watched them jump in the river.

The tradition has become a signature moment for graduates celebrating the end of their time at Texas State. A record 5,200 students graduated from the university, surpassing the previous record set in 2019. Texas State held eight commencement ceremonies Thursday through Saturday.

Long considered a bedroom community for Austin, Round Rock — like much of Central Texas — has recently seen dramatic growth.

With a population of around 142,530, it's ranked 30th among the state's most populous cities, similar to the size of Waco and Abilene.

With city officials saying Round Rock is only halfway built out, there is plenty of room for the city to grow even more.

Austin will fight over almost anything food-related — tacos, barbecue, where to get the best martini — but queso still unites the table.

The city treats molten cheese as a ritual: the thing ordered before the first margarita, the glue between late-night conversations, the appetizer that lands on the table while everybody argues about where Austin went wrong and keeps eating anyway.

Finding the best queso in Austin is not complicated. Adi Anand, co-founder of Quesoff, an annual competition that crowns the city's best dip, once told the American-Statesman that the way to judge it comes down to appearance, taste and texture.

You look for sheen without oil slicks. Flavor without gimmick. Texture that lands somewhere between velvet and recklessness. Food in Austin often gets overthought, but queso still rewards instinct.

The Pflugerville Independent School District will close four elementary schools in fall 2027 as the district projects an $18 million shortfall next school year.

Trustees voted unanimously to close all elementary schools except Windermere, which trustees voted to shutter in a 4-3 vote. Board President Chevonne Lorgio-Johst and trustees Jean Mayer and Claudia Yañez opposed the measure.

In 2019, Parmer Lane Elementary was the public school where Gov. Greg Abbott signed House Bill 3, a landmark $11.5 billion bipartisan school funding law. Last year, Texas Democrats also used the campus as the backdrop for a press conference blaming Abbott for withholding public school funding as he pushed lawmakers to pass a $1 billion private school voucher program.

Pflugerville ISD is the latest Texas school district to close schools in an effort to reduce a mounting budget deficit as enrollment declines. The district is already grappling with a $10.9 million deficit this fiscal year.
