Their paths were never meant to cross in anything but conflict and difference. Yet beneath the canopy of an enchanted wood, where sunlight filters through ancient branches and the world seems to hold its breath, everything changed.

Part 1 of “Smoke and Silk” project
Smoke and Shadows — In this particular Image, I wanted to highlight smoking as an elegant act of defiance. Smoking, a forbidden act for women of South Asia. This image turn it into something sacred and almost spiritual. The use of monochrome effect forms a raw emotional response; smoke becoming a prayer to the self, rising like incense from personal temples. The heavily embellished sari, with its intricate beadwork and traditional silhouette, exerts a stunning contrast against the cigarette held.
The use of dramatic lighting is intended to transforms the subject into a goddess of her own making, adorned in tradition but breathing her own truth.
“Smoke and Silk” embodies the intricate dance of identity and heritage. This piece captures the dual essence of my existence and my journey, that is woven from the luxurious threads of tradition. The timeless elegance of silk sarees and its roots deep within the South Asian culture, its unique threading is a testament of my past self. Smoke symbolises the ongoing swirls of adaptation and changes, representing the fluid nature of cultural assimilation and personal transformation. This is a reflection of the crossroads, where I exist, where both my worlds collide, when tradition and change intertwine.

A rare opportunity to witness a friend perform, combined with my long-standing obsession with Kathak, brought this project to life. Capturing two distinct pieces - Shiv Vandana and Dhamar taal.
Rather than freezing motion, I let movements blur, transforming dancers into flowing light, fabric into streams, and ghungroos into luminous arcs. These photographs translate the ephemeral nature of performance itself, where motion becomes subject and the camera becomes witness to stories told through the body in time.

Through the vibrant colour treatment, I honour the construction process as a form of urban performance art. Each image presents the construction zone as a spectacular event where the machinery of city building and cables that keep the site intact becomes the main attraction.
