This week, we’re diving into salmon anatomy with special guest Taylor McAlister, who is the Education Coordinator at FISH (Friends of the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery). New to our podcast? UCDS 1st- and 2nd-grade students are making their radio broadcasting debut this month with “Somethin’ Fishy,” airing and streaming on Seattle’s SPACE 101.1 FM, Saturdays in May at 9am. The show features 1-2s as DJs, interviewers, game show hosts, poets, and more! Created as a four-episode musical podcast series, “Somethin’ Fishy” celebrates our kids’ educational journey caring for and learning about salmon. Throughout the series, listeners get to hear firsthand discoveries, questions, observations, and, not to mention, plenty of catchy tunes.

We’d like to give a huge shout-out to everyone who helped bring this podcast to life: the students and 1-2 team who spent countless hours writing, researching, and recording each episode; Mark Patterson and the community at SPACE 101.1 FM for welcoming us into their studios and onto the airwaves; the interview guests who generously shared their time and knowledge; 1-2 teacher Ziggy, who recorded much of the audio; and Drew, our Digital Media Specialist and the creative force behind the project, who supported every step of the process—from writing and recording the theme song to editing the entire series and so much more.
