“That’s A Wrap!”
on “Nobody Sees Me Like You Do”! I’ve worked on such a spectrum of formats and budgets this year but I learn and grow from every single one! My first love is feature filmmaking so it was a treat to hunker down for 15 days in the Annex with a small cast and crew to really meditate on this intimate personal relationship drama! As always, the people I get to spend time with every day on set are what lifts me up above all- I can hardly believe the spiritual communion I get to be a part of :) ❤️with Director Keith Hodder @hoddernity , whose work really strikes a deep chord with me, with HMUA Jay Bezouska @jaybezouska_ , whose companionship is a True blessing, with Production Designer Jojo @lordflackojosye - few weeks of Jojo exposure is so good for the soul :) and all the lovelies- all just artist spirits like a swarm of fireflies crafting patterns of light together :) ❤️

What an honour and a pleasure to teach script at @_liftfilm !!! Especially meaningful as the previous instructor @jtimothyhunt who asked me to take over the class was one of my first script instructors! And @_liftfilm was actually my own “film school” as I took like 20 workshops here between 2015-2018. AND I got to use a traditional overhead projector for the first time in 25 years, a tool I used to use in high school art class to trace enlargements. Such a pleasure to share the fun of this craft with students in such a meaningfully aligned way :D Extra special thanks to @_liftfilm for supporting my wild ideas!!! xo

WELL, this wasn’t any old gardening job! Everything in this wild garden was originally planted by Merlin Homer, an 82-yr old Mohawk artist, over the past 50 years. The garden also contains the ashes of her Griffin Award winning poet husband David McFadden- needless to say, it’s a truly Sacred Space!!! It was a huge honour to be invited to do this work. Merlin and I went to Fiesta Gardens and bought more flowers than I’d ever seen before for me to plant. We wove old roshbushes, cut down dead trees, planted a million Native perennials, scattered seeds, made paths with pine bark and stones, pruned, weeded, watered and swept over a period of 12 days (and I’ll be back watering!:). It was so nice to harmonize with Merlin through this project and truly “re-wild” the garden by keeping such a light touch. Thanks to the 274 worms I met and the robin who was never more than a meter away.

That’s a wrap on Strangers 3 reshoots!!! What a thrilling and challenging 17 days!!! All overnights, mostly outside in the bush, mostly overtime- 20 hours today jesus twice we started in the evening and wrapped the following afternoon.

Working with master Hollywood director Renny Harlin was absolutely wicked and enlightening :):):) Mads Petsch was such a powerhouse and sure made a guy feel special on his birthday!!! Showrunner Courtney Solomon was an incredible driving force!!!

AND one of my script mentors- Shane Scott- who’s friends with Renny from keeping script for him in the past— CAME TO VISIT! What a boost this show was for me :) So much love to ALL my film friends!!! :):):):):) ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ @shanescott8044 @rennyharlin @madelame

So many big changes in the last couple years- so many exciting developments with my writing and filmmaking- but none of which involve me making money- so can’t say it was easy taking a 3-month $19 warehouse job to survive the winter but I’m sure glad I did! And plus I’ll get to see the flowers in the spring!!! :) I feel like I had a good old-fashioned artist’s fight with myself, but I stuck with the job and met a whole bunch of amazing people!!! The people at the warehouse were everything!!! The sweetest, realest, crew- people I will never soon forget :) :) ❤️

For Christ’s Sake at Market Video

What a beautiful afternoon!!! I’m so grateful to have had For Christ’s Sake play at Market Video today, but more than anything I’m so, so grateful that my sister Sarah was there sitting beside me. Her being there today was the most perfect bow on this project that began six years ago, and now feels more fully whole. When I made this movie and showed her an early print, the single most important acknowledgement and validation came from her, when she said, “Sadie’s a good character.” Making this movie has been like a violent upheaval, full of pain, but certainly not without joy and hopefully some beauty and grace too. The gift of my sister is someone with whom I share a very special knowing, and a reflection of so much heart-wrenching courage and heroism. Creating the character of Sadie is a way for me to express that. There are so many more stories to tell, and I pray I get to tell them.

The warm, cozy, home-away-from-home of Market Video was the perfect setting for today, and I feel very honoured to be able to contribute something to that place. Extra special thanks to Dan and Ryan for curating and hosting, and to Sean for being there too. For Christ’s Sake lives!!! @forchristssakemovie @marketvideotoronto @newcircleofcinema @jokedevivre @badinfinite @sarahmcnally @seanbwilliams

Another homecoming for +For Christ’s Sake- a home-home-coming! At the coolest cinema in Toronto- Kensington’s @marketvideotoronto - in a 12-hour xmas movie marathon astutely curated by @jokedevivre and @newcircleofcinema ‘s @badinfinite on Saturday Dec 14 between 3-5pm. DM @marketvideotoronto for location :). Market Video is created and organized by Dan Vila who ran Double Double Land art space in the same room for like 12 years, (after @puppetislander ‘s Jamie’s Area dissolved) a room I’ve visited many times since it’s inception but never shown or performed. Anyways- should be a fun Saturday afternoon screening in the market! Hope to see everyone who missed the Toronto premiere last year :) Simon

Well that’s a wrap on @niagaraartistscentre @mightyniagarafilmfest !!! What a great 5 days in a mirror-hall of St. Catharines, filmmaking, Winnipeg and Dennis Tourbin!! The past, the present and the future collided in a waterfall of light! Highlights were many but the appearance of @lisakovack ❤️discovering new places, Harry Smith abstractions with live music ❤️, morning convos over coffee + bagels in the sun room on Bellevue, LOTS of the wonderfully indomitable iconoclast :) @guy.maddin (who truly opened my mind) ❤️ WINNIPEG BABYSITTER @_daniel_barrow_ ❤️and delightful end note MATT & MARA- @kazikradwanski ❤️the mighty Niagara truly roared! What a fitting resolution for @forchristssakemovie 18-month festival run! Perhaps another Toronto show is in the works :) Thank you everyone at @niagaraartistscentre ❤️❤️❤️

+For Christ’s Sake+ wins another ‘best of the fest’ award “Best Fiction Film” at Three Fires Int’l Film Festival!!! I took the ‘93 Jeep to Mr. Lube on the way out of Toronto for reassurance it would make it to Huntsville, where I spent Thanksgiving with childhood friends and family, whose continually open home has always been a place of love and warmth for me and is also literally dramatized in my short film which was playing at the Three Fires Int’l Film Festival next town over in Bracebridge. The small Ontario town setting of the weekend befit the film’s setting and I felt like Gustave Courbet, bringing my realism to the people in those towns, digging deeper at symbolic and emotional narratives under the surfaces, at moments too intimately but often illuminating, connecting and carefully letting go. There is something that remains unspoken. Experiencing the film playing in the world is always such a rich experience, witnessing its material life. It was very validating to be awarded the top prize, Best Fiction Film- that’s just really encouraging!! There’s acceptance in it, which moves the work along, releasing energy for new work! I was also so happy to have a short n sweet visit with Jennalee D, my first dance teacher just ten years ago, who lives in Huntsville now too. All in all it was a very symbolic and rewarding weekend!!! Jeep rolled smooth and I made it home with leftover turkey and a slice of pie too!!! :) ♥️ @3firesinternational @jawnmortarPS looking forward to taking it home to the @mightyniagarafilmfest next in November!!!

Very excited to add a St. Catharines date for +For Christ’s Sake+ at the Mighty Niagara Film Festival in November :):):) A proud homecoming for sure, a place I left 25 years ago to go to NSCAD, the place where the story is set… as the airport shuttle driver shouts the destination, “St. Catharines!!!”

That’s a wrap on Gentle Barbarians! 🎉 Indulging my sentimentality, the best moments were looking around at all the beautiful faces surrounding me, the constellation of artist-spirits gathered to make the movie. It’s exactly where I love to be. More than anything I felt a caring, grounded energy in support of all of us. The most satisfying thing to me is being part of a space where people feel free to practice their craft. Seeing people joyfully blossom in their roles is the sweetest, most satisfying thing. 1. w/ our gentle, barbaric director (and writer, star and executive producer) Amir Bageria
2. w/ ACE ADs MVPs 1AD Sarah McGowan and Five Star 2AD Lola Gafaar (missing Paige and Spencer)
3. w/Art Angels Josette “Josephson” Joseph, Jazzy Jay McPherson and Production Designer Nadine “All In” Wager
4. w/Costumiére Extraordináire Annelise Lus (missing Chelsea ❤️)
5. w/HMWA Olivia Maitman, in whose eyes I could always guage the galactic currents (missing MUFX artist Natalie Dale)
and 6. Our intrepid cinematographer Benji Irwin :) There were so many more ❤️and maybe someday I’ll get to have my picture taken with every one of them, but until then keep it going guys! On to the next one :) ❤️⭐️ thank you to @daniellenicolelee for hiring me :)
