IntroducingSimona Racheva! 🌸✨🔥 @simona.racheva
Simona Racheva is a Bulgarian visual multi-disciplinary artist based in London.
Her practice spreads across painting, printmaking, sculpture, drawing, and installation, and she is interested in writing and sound. She addresses sociological and environmental issues, working on themes related to memory, time, the overbuilding of urban areas and climate change. The cyclical action of destruction-reconstruction-connection reappears in her works. She often uses different materials to re-join the broken matter. The creation of objects which realistically mimic their original form presents the inability to reverse actions while showing a desperate effort to restore what has been damaged.
Racheva moved to the UK in 2019 to study and received a BA from Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, followed by an MA in Contemporary Art Practice from the Royal College of Art, London. She is a winner of the Supanee Gazeley Fine Art Prize 2022 (Cambridge, UK), “Always Green, Always Blue” (Torun, Poland), has been
shortlisted multiple times for The Sustainability Art Prize (Cambridge, UK) and has numerous participation in exhibitions, competitions and awards across Bulgaria, the United Kingdom and Poland.

No Man’s Land
.
This is my work Rescue Mission 300 that took part in No Man’s Land in November 2023 at Dyson Gallery, Royal College of Art. It was an amazing show that involved 20 fellow artists and 9 curators.
.
“No Mans Land - Terra Nullius”
Experiencing this phenomenon from environmental, social, and political perspectives, the exhibition will prompt viewers to raise questions such as “What does no man’s land mean for you? Are we doing enough? Are we tolerant enough of other cultures, views and people? Our planet - do we care enough?” —> text from @nomansland.2023 page by @elinayum_art @stepanetsvika @edyta_jaworek @shahmir_hussain89
.
Rescue Mission 300 views nature as an unclaimable independent organism. From a dead found branch in Kensington Gardens (London) to an interactive metamorphosed sculpture out of natural matter, the artistic process is an attempt to partial repair. Using references of surgical stiches in the threads the work explores the idea of reversing and healing the damage previously caused to nature. Evidence of attempts with no confirmation of success. Leaving the inert memory of the branch on display. A place of unity, a space of being, place once destroyed and now unclaimed. - text by @milafernandez_art and @simona.racheva
.
Special thanks to @milafernandez_art , the curator that l worked closely with for the show, for her constant support, enthusiasm and dedication to presenting the work in the best way possible.
.
Special thanks to @stephinitely.tengy , who came with me to the park and documented the whole process of cutting the branch and carrying it for more than an hour to my studio on campus.
.
Last but not least, thanks to all the artist and curators for making such an amazing exhibition and experience. To see all participants that were involved, go to @nomansland.2023

On my way to create something amazing
.
These photographs are from my journey from Kensington Gardens/Hyde Park to my studio at @royalcollegeofart. I carried this branch on the streets of Central London as part of the process of the creation of my new work Rescue Mission 300 for No Man’s Land, which will take part at Dyson Gallery, Royal College of Art, 14-16 November. Come and see what the result is!

FROM THE ARCHIVE
.
Still Present
.
Sustainability Art Prize 2022
.
“Still Present” is an artwork that explores ideas of sustainability of the human mind and brings up a discussion about memory and childhood. It is a mixed media piece made of 7 glass jars that represent years, ashes that represent forgotten memories and pieces of paper with writings of memories that I still remember. Each jar with ashes contains burned paper with descriptions of childhood experiences that I have heard about from my parents but l do not have memories of.
.
Having them in the form of ashes shows that they are still present, even though I cannot remember. The work begins with the idea that memories exist in the subconscious and have a direct influence on the process of forming a personality as well as a strong effect on human behaviour. However, even though we do not have “access” to them, they are still present. During childhood, when we explore and form our vision of the world, our experiences have a great impact on the way we begin to perceive the world. In addition, some of these experiences turn into memories of moments that we love and treasure.
.
Using the jar as a container in which the ashes could be conserved, the work could also remind of a cremation urn, bringing up the concept of burial of the memories in the subconscious but also preserving them from disappearance.
