There is a war waging, always…
but far away enough that
while I lay my body in the grass,
I can hear the salmonbird singing berries into ripeness.

Peaceful enough, that I can hear laughter ring out,
my child racing down to the corner grocery
to trade seashells for candy.

Still enough, that when she is out of earshot,
I can regulate the fast-pumping blood in my veins,
and scream
at the top of my lungs.

Privileged enough,
that when my neighbors hear me,
they do not care.

Fog settles a weighted hand over my mouth,
because while there is a distant war waging
always, it is not right here.

Sun Tzu makes mention of artistry,
Museums hoard its memorabilia.
Around military desks, generals make plans for faraway cities they will bomb next calling them “theaters”,
This thing,
is a play to them.

Dictator/director who will never see centerstage,
always just far away enough,
viewing wreckage through top-balcony opera glasses,
drones,
white papers,
debriefs,
and bank account increases.

They say there is an art to this,
but the artists stretch into miles of faceless-names
acred in black marble, stone we do not even bother to carve by hand anymore,
a machine can do that.

My father isn’t one of them, but just barely.
Shrapnel lives in his arm in exchange
for a Purple Heart that lives in a velvet box.
Jewelry no one will ever wear.

There is a war waging always.
One that I have never smelled or seen or heard,
distant enough that I have time to write this before my daughter returns home.
And while nothing seems to be wrong,
it is notrighthere.

Grieve this, but not alone,
Do not succumb to yet another numbing.
Water the garden,
bring it up from the wellspring if you have to.
And make your true art,
the full width and breadth of it,
essential for our healing.
