[Momentrait : Imken, Art teacher]

Q. I heard you’ve been living in Berlin for almost 40 years. Do you still remember your first impression of the city?

A. The simultaneity of past and present in German history was palpable. When I arrived in West Berlin, there were still so-called “rubble lots” by bombs destroyed houses, that had remained untouched since the end of the Second World War. There were tram tracks that simply ended in the middle of nowhere, cut off by the Wall. There were old ballrooms dating back to before the war, opened only for concerts and dance events. A patina of the past hung over the entire city, and it gave it a very distinctive charm.

Q. What sentence or thought lingers in your mind most often these days?

A. …and when this meat has had its fill, please plant it as a daffodil.

[Momentrait : Imken, Art teacher]

Q.As an artist, what kind of work would you like to explore in the future?

A. I never had the space for sculpturing and I hope to find a place outside of Berlin where I can do it.
