Due to a recent court order, the red snapper exempted fishing permits issued by NOAA Fisheries to the four South Atlantic states, including South Carolina, have been suspended until further notice. This means that SCDNR cannot issue permits for the red snapper fishing beginning July 1, 2026, as planned. Please stay tuned for further updates as they become available. This action does not affect red snapper harvest in state waters, where there is no closed season and anglers may keep up to two fish with a minimum size of 20 inches per day.

Today kicks off Memorial Day Weekend, the unofficial start of summer!
Like many of you, we are excited for warmer weather, vacations with family and friends, and time off work.
Also like many of you, we will be out on the water this weekend and all summer long.
While you’re on the water, remember to always prepare for the unexpected, NEVER boat under the influence, and ALWAYS wear a life jacket.
If you don’t… we’ll be seeing you.

Memorial Day weekend is one of the busiest boating weekends of the year and our officers want to ensure the safety of all people and waterways.
Before hitting the water, make sure your vessel is up-to-date with all registration and safety equipment.
Wondering if your vessel would pass a safety inspection? Stop by one of our courtesy boat inspections for a free check! Tickets will NOT be issued during these complimentary inspections.

In perfect timing with the weather, this week is Heat Safety Week in South Carolina. 🌡️
Did you know that excessive heat is the number one weather-related killer in the US?
Between May and September of 2024, there were more than 2,000 heat-related illness visits to emergency rooms in South Carolina with nearly 250 of those requiring hospitalization.
Keep yourself and your family safe this summer by following these tips:
💧 Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
☀️ Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest parts of the day (typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.).
👕 Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing.
🌴 Take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.
🚗 Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles, even for a few minutes.
💨 Check on neighbors or those without access to air conditioning.

Today kicks off National Safe Boating Week, an annual campaign marking the start of the summer boating season 🚤
Throughout this week and this entire summer, you will see constant reminders to wear your life jacket, act responsibly on the water, designate a sober skipper and take boating safety seriously.
Don’t let one bad decision ruin your life or end someone else’s. Safe boating is no accident.

Today, SCDNR staff across the state joined in on Wear Your Life Jacket at Work Day to kick off Safe Boating Week, a fun and important reminder that life jackets save lives.
U.S. Coast Guard statistics show that drowning was the reported cause of death in three out of every four recreational boating fatalities in 2023. Let’s change that statistic, because safe boating is no accident.

Today, May 15, is recognized as Peace Officers Memorial Day, celebrated during National Police Week as a time to honor and remember those who have given their lives in the line of duty.
Since the start of our agency, 12 officers and one K9 have made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting South Carolina’s natural resources.
We will never forget the sacrifices they made and we hope this list never grows longer.
