We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who joined us at the Abbey of San Giorgio Maggiore for Friday’s inauguration celebrating the restoration of Jacopo Tintoretto’s The Last Supper and Israelites in the Desert.

This transformative conservation project was made possible through the generous support of The Stracke Family, and through the collaboration of the expert conservators of @cbc_conservazionebeniculturali, the art handlers of @uni.s.ve, and the officials of the @soprintendenza_venezia_laguna and the @abbaziasangiorgiomaggiore.

The occasion also marked the culmination of the inaugural week-long journey of the #SVContemporaries, a new patron group and program dedicated to fostering meaningful dialogue between the contemporary art world and our enduring mission to preserve the artistic heritage of Venice.

At the Italian Cultural Institute of New York, Professor Sarah Blake McHam delivered an insightful lecture on one of Save Venice’s most exciting current restorations–Donatello’s “Gattamelata”. She explored the monument’s history and pivotal significance as the first large-scale sculpture honoring an individual since the fall of the Roman Empire.

Turning to the restoration, she examined the effects of over 600 years outdoors, detailing the condition of the bronze statue and its stone pedestal after centuries of exposure to the elements (and pigeons). She reviewed the conservation plan and timeline, with completion anticipated in 2027.

Executive Director Amy Gross introduced Professor McHam, Distinguished Professor Emerita at Rutgers University anda leading scholar of Italian Renaissance art in Venice, Padua, and Florence. She has served as a Save Venice Board Member since 2015.

“Grazie mille” to Professor McHam for sharing her time and expertise with our members, and to the Italian Cultural Institute and Director Claudio Pagliara for graciously hosting.

Save Venice is excited to officially launch The Contemporaries–a new patron group and program dedicated to fostering meaningful connections between the contemporary art world and our enduring mission to preserve the artistic heritage of Venice.

We began the week with a presentation and reception at our Venetian headquarters, followed by a festive gathering in a private palazzo generously hosted by founding board members Lee Doyle, Amy Harmon, and Tina Walls.

Yesterday, the program's Founding Members had the privilege of participating in the Preview Day of the 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, In Minor Keys, conceived by the late Koyo Kouoh. Guided by curator Miranda Lash, the group toured exhibitions at the Giardini and Arsenale meeting with several artists, including Kambui Olujimi, María Magdalena Campos-Pons, Kamaal Malak, Joy Episalla, George Buma Ampratwum, Yinka Shonibare, and more.

Save Venice is honored to support the 61st Venice Biennale and to celebrate the powerful dialogue between past and present that has defined Venice as a global cultural capital since 1895.

Check out our stories to follow this week’s journey, culminating in the restoration inauguration of Jacopo Tintoretto’s paintings at the Abbey of San Giorgio Maggiore this Friday.

✨🌙 Un Ballo in Maschera — Celestial Serenissima🌙✨
📍 The Plaza | April 17, 2026

Beneath a canopy of stars, guests stepped into a dreamscape of glittering glamour and celestial wonder. Masked figures drifted through an enchanted evening, pausing for whispered tarot readings, then looking skyward toward a starlit aerialist suspended on a spinning moon.

Surrounded by shimmering masks, candlelit tables, and a constellation of unforgettable moments, over 450 supporters came together to celebrate and raise more than $1.3 million to preserve the irreplaceable treasures of La Serenissima.

Thank you to sponsors Oscar de la Renta, Graff and Tilt Beauty and our wonderful Co-Chairs and Junior Chairs for making this special evening possible!

Save Venice and the @abbaziasangiorgiomaggiore are pleased to announce the completion of the restoration of Jacopo Tintoretto’s "The Last Supper” and “The Israelites in the Desert.” This achievement was made possible with the essential support of Save Venice and the Stracke Family, the expert restorers from the @cbc_conservazionebeniculturali firm, and specialized art handlers from @uni.s.ve.

The conservation treatment, carried out between February 2025 and April 2026, has brought back clarity and depth, revealing Tintoretto’s extraordinary tonal range and dynamic brushwork. The removal of yellowed varnish and altered overpainting uncovered long-hidden details, restoring vibrancy, balance, and cohesion to these remarkable compositions.

Tintoretto Rediscovered ✨

We are proud to share the restoration of Jacopo Tintoretto’s two canvases, The Last Supper and The People of Israel in the Desert.

This achievement was made possible thanks to the essential support of Save Venice and the Stracke Family, the expert hands of the CBC restorers, and the specialized handling by the UniSVe team.

Back on display at the Basilica for all to admire.

Happy Birthday Venice! ❤️🦁

According to legend, Venice was founded in the year 421, on March 25th – the Feast of the Annunciation, when the Archangel Gabriel reveals to the Virgin Mary that she will bear Christ. This symbolic alignment with the Virgin’s divine favor helped shape a powerful narrative: that Venice, too, was chosen to fulfill an ordained mission–protected, guided, and set apart from its very beginning.

This connection to the Annunciation echoes across centuries of Venetian art. Save Venice has funded the conservation of many remarkable depictions of the scene, including Titian’s masterpiece for the Scuola Grande di San Rocco. Thanks to the generous support of Richard K. Riess, the painting was restored in 2022–2023 by Giulio Bono and his team.

New insights from this conservation campaign are now published in “Titian & Save Venice: Conserving Six Masterpieces.”

We are excited to announce a new Women Artists of Venice (WAV) conservation project: Giulia Lama’s “Madonna and Child with Saints Peter and Magnus and the Allegory of Venice” in the church of Santa Maria Formosa.

This remarkable altarpiece, dating to the early 1720s, was likely the first ecclesiastical commission Lama received. It was created for the high altar of her parish church where she was baptized and spent her entire life in the immediate neighbourhood. The painting was removed from the high altar after the church was severely damaged during World War I. The picture was only rediscovered in storage by parish priest Father Gino Bortolan in the early 1970s and has been displayed in the apse behind the main altar of the church for the past five decades.

Conservator Claudia Vittori and her team will carry out the treatment on-site within the church. Their work will urgently address mold growth on the painted surface and lining, as well as remove oxidized varnishes and chromatically-altered inpainting from previous interventions.

Save Venice extends its heartfelt gratitude to Donna Malin for her generous support of this project.
