Making with Meaning. Textile Art. Maker Membership. Making Meaning Podcast. Writing. Textile history research.

A hand embroidered digital print hybrid self portrait (for my forthcoming Mary Linwood exhibition) by way of introduction for #septtextilelove @seam_collective
I’ve been a professional textile artist full time for 20 years after a much shorter career working in the museum sector specialising in textile history and public engagement. Although my job title and working life is very different now, it still revolves around historic and contemporary textiles, creating exhibitions, writing about textiles and sharing my art work and research with other textile enthusiasts. I make research-based textile artworks in all kinds of shapes and forms, usually hand stitched and always meaningful and influenced by history. I host the Making Meaning podcast, run a membership, write books and curate exhibitions. And some other stuff but that’s more than enough!

don’t draw often these days but when I do, it reminds me just how important drawing is for looking, noticing and slowing down. I trained as a textile curator in the 90s when digital photography wasn’t available. I was taught to draw accurately and slowly to record details. I never had to do this professionally but it’s one of the many ways of seeing and understanding from museum training that has served me well as an artist and creative researcher. I created Maker Membership as a place to share my learning and experience of research and transferring that into making practice.

I have made a little book of needles for @thevictorianhand workshop at @thequiltersguild tomorrow. It contains a range of modern needles for different crafts, some handmade and antique needles and a few modern surgical ones too.

I’ve just packed up this piece of mine from a few years ago for Friday’s workshop with @thevictorianhand at @thequiltersguild. The workshop focuses on mending and I’m thinking about sense of touch, hand stitching and emotional connection through textiles and stitchers of the past. I often work with historic textiles but usually with minimal intervention and a subtly of touch and hand stitch. This piece is called Interior and explores our hidden inner worlds by peeking through the fabric lining to the back of the patchwork pieces. It’s made from a 19th century silk patchwork, made into a chair cover at some point and very lightly reworked by me.

I love books, I love textiles. Books about textiles is my absolute sweet spot. I want to write more books about textilesbut for now, I’m reading books about textiles. Last summer I started a Textile Book Group for fellow fans of the written word and fabric. Our next meeting is on Monday, discussing Worn by Sofi Thanhauser. I’ve not actually finished this one yet but I am nearly there. It’s so interesting and I am really looking forward to hearing what others think. The next two books are are in this post, for June and August. We read The Point of the Needle last year. Book group is on Monday at 6pm, online and tickets are £5. 📕 📕 📚

Yesterday I had a very glorious, colourful day out in London. First for the launch of @sara.cook3 fabulous cherry blossom installation at the Garden Museum, then on the the Hayward Gallery for two amazing exhibitions : Chiharu Shiota: Threads of Life and Yin Xiuzhen: Heart to Heart. Then to the Fashion & Textiles Museum to see the pincushions and an extra delight of Pattern & Print, the Cambell Collier exhibition, which was one of the best pieces of exhibition design I’ve seen for ages (apart from my Mary Linwood one). What a wonderful, colourful day full of textile delights.

Today's Making Meaning podcast is about the new body of work I made for Mary Linwood; Art, Stitch & Life exhibition. Alongside researching, curating and writing the first exhibition of Mary Linwood’s work in 75 year, I also created seven new artworks reflecting elements of Mary Linwood’s life and legacy.
These pieces fill in gaps in Mary Linwood’s story, explore themes I find fascinating and allow me to express my own thoughts and feelings about Linwood’s work and life. These photos are taken in St Margaret's Church, Leicester, where Mary Linwood is buried. Brilliant photographs by @paullapsley who always seems to enjoy my random photography requests!

I’m feeling very fed up about a funding rejection today so I gave up on useful work and immersed myself in working on my entirely non-essential side quest of making historic-inspired sleeves. This one is 1820s and made of my own hand sewn, naturally dyed patchwork from a dozen years ago or more. This project has absolutely no purpose other than creative challenge and joy. Absolutely recommend. 🪡

Making Meaning Podcast is back with a new series. It’s almost five years since I started making this podcast and this is series 6. In this episode I’m solo, talking about what I’ve learned from the Mary Linwood Rediscovered project, from studying Mary Linwood and from sharing her story with the world. Also introducing my new online course if you want to know more (frankly, loads) about Mary Linwood. 🧵 🪡

It really is a pleasure to have my work in @llantarnam_grange 60th birthday exhibition. It’s such a special place for me, I’ve had two solo exhibitions and contributed to several others. I’ve received so much support from Louise over the last 15 years! I recorded a podcast with her in 2022, episode 15 of Making Meaning.
This piece, Embedded, is in their amazing group show on at the moment. Embedded explores personal connections and layers of meaning to the landscape. 🧵 🪡

I’m currently deeply engrossed in putting together an online course exploring the life and work of the great Mary Linwood. It’s been almost a month since the exhibition closed and I’m still thinking about her incredible work. What would like to know about Mary Linwood and her legacy?
