Some of you asked about my cheeky feedback re: Kylie’s Met Gala look, reviewed burlesque costume style. I’m happy to share! Just keep in mind these are my personal opinions, and there’s no right or wrong way to costume yourself in burlesque.

1. The bodice-flopped-down in front removal. Gack. To me it looks sloppy and full of effort, creating a weird boobs-on-the-pelvis, upside down torso silhouette. “But it’s only for a split second!” you cry. Well the photographer is 100% going to catch that moment!

2. If you insist on showing us the inside of your costume, please make it exciting. Put an interesting lining in there, your phone number, a QR code for tipping… SOMETHING to let me know I should be looking at it and that it’s intentional. Not just a “whoops, I hope they’re looking at my bewbs and not the lining of this gown!”

3. I’ll shout this from the rooftops: Your underpinnings should get MORE exciting as you go, not less. Proximity to your skin, to your ultimate reveals, should indicate increasing value, sparkle and excitement! A gorgeous outer gown with un-embellished, disappointing shapewear underneath sends a sad trombone message. “But I have a limited budget!” you say. Then start embellishing your tiniest pieces- your pasties and g-string first, and work outwards. ✨
