There are those projects that affect the course of one’s life and the future decisions that you make. Being a part of Bomb’s “Shaka Ilembe” is one of those. This has marked my return back in to dramatic narrative, I have put the DP hat back on. My passion is lighting and telling a story through the visual language of a camera. Part of that passion is serving a director’s vision and the team at Bomb brought that in buckets! The creative direction of Angus Gibson is phenomenal, he led a young team to make something that will be a truly memorable piece of filmmaking. @Zenopetersen did an incredible job as a Director and as the 1st unit DP, keeping such a positive energy throughout a very gruelling schedule. The cast where inspired and breathed such realism and life into the characters, even in the very cold conditions. Big up to @lemogangtsipa as Shaka and @thembinkosi_mthembu for such stellar performances it was an honour to work with you all. Gratitude.

I’m really excited to share a taster of this work which starts flighting on June 18th on DSTV South Africa. It was an honour and a privilege to collaborate, once again, with The Bomb. Working with Angus Gibson is such a pleasure and I also got to engage with the incredibly talented @adzeugah whose energy is spectacular. Every day on set was a gift, @mr_mananga transported us to another time, another world in the late 1800’s of a truly breathtaking South Africa. This is going to be a very special series to watch and I hope you all feel the passion and fun that went in to making it. I’m still vibrating with it.

I am delighted to join some of the biggest and brightest names in the creative community as a jury member of D&AD Awards 2023 in the Cinematography category.

Since 1962, D&AD has been inspiring a community of creative thinkers by celebrating and stimulating the finest in design and advertising. The D&AD Awards are recognised globally as the ultimate creative accolade, entered and judged by the best from around the world.

But it’s much more than just Awards. When creatives enter their work, they enable D&AD as a charity to provide learning programmes such as New Blood, bridging the gap between education and the commercial creative industries, and Shift, which supports underrepresented talent.

The work that wins a D&AD Pencil leaves an important and lasting legacy. It is the pinnacle of many careers, but most importantly it informs the future of commercial creativity globally, so I am thrilled to be offered the opportunity to take part in the Jury.

Entries for the Awards are being accepted as we speak and will be closing on Wednesday 15 March 2023.

I have combined my passion of fly fishing with filming and created a you tube channel called The Craft with @owenbruceflytying. The idea is to profile skilled people in the fly fishing world who are either great fly tiers, rod builders or who add their creativity to this obsessive sport through painting, sculpture, photography.
