All art is the interpretation - expression - of another human being. They record what Nature has inspired - their feelings and perspective. And we, as the viewer, find some sense of connection and appreciation in that humanized presentation.

Nature is the reality - the inspiration. Art is the interpretation - the emotion of the moment captured. As humans, our ability to find connection with reality through another's interpretation is significant. However, we should not give up any opportunity to experience - to connect with - reality whenever possible...to find out what personal interpretation we might have.

Whether you believe in God, a creator, or source - there is no denying that some universal design exists for the living world to exist so completely, and for the human species to be a part of it. Some would say the design - the art - of Nature is proof of the divine. That may be true. Regardless, it is stunning in its bounty and brilliant in its inspiration!

There are nothing but nature sounds on the GAP, but this was something different! A grotto of sorts with this beautiful cascade just off the trail. Beautiful.

No one can truly appreciate art without also appreciating Nature. We can only relate to art by our recognition of the world in it. The style doesn't matter - it's the underlying interpretation of emotions, of light, of the universe as presented by and through a human lens.

Recently, I've been meditating on art and its relationship to Nature. Boudin's quote captures in words - which escaped me - the immediacy and intimacy of observing and interpreting the living world in real time. There is a rich history of artists recording the natural world in paint as the moment unfolds around them - sometimes better and more understanding than using a camera!

Have you ever considered how our ancestors seemed to carry such wisdom and insight, and it is somehow forgotten or tossed aside by contemporaries for being out of touch with the context of modern society? We've all heard the adage that those who do not learn from the past are damned to repeat it. This quote from Cicero is no less true today than it was in 40 B.C. - and the words and ideas of our forebears are no less true now than when they were spoken/written/shared. There are lessons still to be gleaned from those who came before us.

Yesterday, I took some time to sit outside and observe the trees - specifically the branches, the fractals. Then, I sketched what I saw - charcoal on newsprint - art inspired by the repeating patterns in Nature. It became a dress rehearsal for the Saturday, May 23rd DRAWING FRACTALS class I'm leading near Ohiopyle, PA. Learn more on my website at https://rhnaturereconnect.com/upcoming-events

Whether we are observing Nature as a muse for art or in acknowledgement that it is art, reveling in the wonder and beauty of the natural world is a way of deepening and strengthening our relationship with it.

I recently overheard a conversation between a father and his young daughter on a trail in a State Parkthat broke my heart:
π
GIRL: Daddy, isn't this beautiful?
FATHER: (looking down at his phone) Hmm?
GIRL: Look at the trees!
FATHER: (looking up) Yeah. I see. A fortune in timberbeing wasted.
GIRL: What do you mean?
FATHER: Nothing. You're right. It's pretty. Let's go get ice cream.
GIRL: Any flavor I want?
FATHER: Don't see why not.
π
One: what a wasted opportunity to share in the beauty of Nature with your child; Two: why bother coming into a public green space if that's how you feel about Nature; Three: you owe your child an education and a future on a liveable planet, moron!

Art is just another form of connection. Being grounded and aware, observing and recording what we see in Nature, and then interpreting that through our own creative lens...that is highlighting a deep and meaningful relationship between the artist and the muse.
