I had a great time visiting the Horseshoe at the University of South Carolina for the post-final exam feast for professor Matthew Simmons's Southern Studies 350, Barbecue: Southern History and Culture on the Plate. Sounds like quite a rigorous course of study, and, yes, there were field trips . . .

Wow, what a weekend of barbecue at @gettinpiggy_nc in Raleigh. It was my first time visiting this event and was super impressed by everything—good beer, courtesy @trophymaywood, great music, and more than anything a ridiculous number of tasty bites, both barbecue and non-barbecue, from a lineup of heavy hitters from the Carolinas and beyond. Finally made it to @lawrencebarbecue's new downtown Cary spot yesterday, and it's even better than I anticipated. No BBQ this trip since I was saving up for @gettinpiggy_nc, but I did get the secret ingredients in that "super secret BBQ butter" on those oysters -- and, no, I'm not telling!

My research into South Carolina beer history took me to Walhalla this weekend, which was home to a pioneering lager brewery back in the 1870s and 1880s. More than a century later they are making lager beer in Walhalla again (and IPAs, porters, and sours) at @freehousebeerwal — and tasty wood-fired pizzas, too.

Right nearby is the St. John’s Lutheran Church, built ca. 1860 by John Kaufmann, who later founded and operated the brewery, and just up the road the never-finished Stumphouse Tunnel, which was supposed to take the Blue Ridge Railroad into Tennessee but ran out of funds just before the Civil War.
