RMIT Galleries represents RMIT Gallery, First Site and Design Hub Gallery.
Announcing ‘The Concentric Influences of Sol LeWitt: Foundations, Pivots and Place’, opening at RMIT Gallery on 5 June 2026.
Instigated and directed by Dr Irene Barberis (RMIT School of Art), this exhibition emerges from her long-term friendship and mentorship with the esteemed American conceptual artist Sol LeWitt.
In the 1960s, LeWitt revolutionised the definition of contemporary art by presenting the simple but radical idea that a work of art’s concept is more important than its form.
RMIT Gallery is delighted to centre this exhibition around a LeWitt wall drawing; the first to be publicly exhibited in Victoria since 1977.
'Concentric Influences’ will showcase the work of an established nucleus of international artists who worked closely with LeWitt during his career: Irene Barberis (AUS), John Hogan (USA), Fransje Killaars (NLD), Janet Passehl (USA), Wilma Tabacco (AUS); with a group of invited contemporary Australian artists: Jonas Balsaitis, Emma Coulter, Sarah Duyshart, Robert Hunter, Robin Kingston, Simon Klose, Sara Lindsay, Jordan Mitchell-Fletcher, Kerrie Poliness, Antonia Sellbach, Jacqueline Stojanović, David Thomas and Anne Scott Wilson.

In partnership with The Concentric Influences of Sol LeWitt project, RMIT Gallery is delighted to be displaying ‘Wall Drawing #123A’, the first Sol LeWitt wall drawing to be publicly displayed in Victoria in almost 50 years, generously loaned by the LeWitt Family and Estate.
“The idea becomes a machine that makes the art”
According to American artist Sol LeWitt, art is found in the process of creation.
Born in 1928, in Hartford, Connecticut, LeWitt was pivotal in the Conceptual Art movement of the 1960s, supporting the creation of a new aesthetic in contradiction to post-war Abstract Expressionism.
Unique to LeWitt’s work was the importance of the ‘concept’ or ‘idea’:
"All intervening steps, scribbles, sketches, drawings, failed work models, studies thoughts, conversations, are of interest. Those that show the thought process of the artist are sometimes more interesting than the final product."
His work ranged from prints on paper to sculptures (or ‘structures’ as he preferred), but he is most notably known for his wall drawings, and the specific set of installation instructions that accompanied them.
LeWitt’s wall drawings paralleled the proliferation of street art and graffiti at the time, and embodied acts of rebellion against the craft-heavy Abstract Expressionist genre. Drawing directly onto gallery walls meant that the works ultimately had to be destroyed. The wall drawings were defined by their specific sets of instructions rather than their physical manifestations, meaning that the artwork was able to iterate, evolve and grow with each reproduction.
LeWitt was constantly questioning, destroying and reinventing his practice. His work revolved around the knowledge that “what he defined he could later refine, edit, and alter”.

The Practice Research Symposium (PRS) showcases the research of Higher Degree by Research candidates in RMIT’s College of Design and Social Context – offering extensive transdisciplinary research collaboration for candidates working across the disciplines of architecture, art, photography, industrial design, interior design, landscape architecture, fashion and textiles, digital design, creative writing, journalism, communication design and spatial information architecture.

'Boiling Matters’ by Elisa Zorraquin at First Site Gallery.
'Boiling Matters’ employs Elisa Zorraquin's background in industrial design to consider the social capacity of jewellery to facilitate generous, caring and intimate exchanges between different peoples. The artist's participatory works engage both the mind and body through multiple handcrafted teacups threaded on a single chain, activated through a choregraphed sipping of tea. 'Boiling Matters' asks how shared rituals can become opportunities to slow down and partake in meditative communions.

'Boiling Matters’ by Elisa Zorraquin at First Site Gallery.
'Boiling Matters’ employs Elisa Zorraquin's background in industrial design to consider the social capacity of jewellery to facilitate generous, caring and intimate exchanges between different peoples. The artist's participatory works engage both the mind and body through multiple handcrafted teacups threaded on a single chain, activated through a choregraphed sipping of tea. 'Boiling Matters' asks how shared rituals can become opportunities to slow down and partake in meditative communions.

'Slip' by Noah Bridger at First Site Gallery.
'Slip' is a practice-led exhibition which seeks to reveal the poetic qualities of recently discarded bluestones around RMIT University. Through the process of moulding and casting these stones into beeswax, Noah Bridger investigates the role of the artist in mediating a relationship between public spaces and people. In softening the rigidity of bluestone, Bridger reimagines how we might interact with Melbourne’s urban landscapes.

'Portable Stillness' is an ongoing spatial installation where physical expressions of memory speak to the unstable and peripatetic nature of diasporic living. Motivated by the artist's own lived experience and personal collection of sentimental keepsakes, miniature handcrafted jewels and soldered objects are arranged on floating altar-like displays that speak not to preservation, but the transitory state of impermanence.
