OPENING ON SATURDAY📌

Aftershadow, a solo exhibition by New York–based abstract painter Demetrius Wilson, showcases a dynamic selection of new paintings that explore color, movement, and form. Aftershadow is set to open on May 23rd, 2026. An opening reception will be held that evening 5-8pm at 919 Gallatin Ave. Nashville, TN 37206.

Demetrius Wilson (b. 1996, Boston, MA) lives and works
in New York, NY. He received his MFA in Painting from
Hunter College in 2024. Recent solo exhibitions include
BAM! at Half Gallery and Begin the End at Harper’s,
both in New York, as well as presentations with T293
Gallery, Rome, and Taymour Grahne Projects, London.
His work has been included in recent group exhibitions
at Half Gallery, Jenkins Johnson Gallery, and The Ranch
in New York, Mitochondria Gallery in Houston, Tern
Gallery in the Bahamas, Megan Mulrooney in Los Angeles, and Red Arrow in Nashville. Willson’s artworks are included in notable private collections, including the Perry Art Collection.

Red Arrow invites you to the opening reception of Aftershadow, a solo exhibition of new work by New York–based abstract painter Demetrius Wilson, opening tomorrow evening, May 23rd, from 5–8pm.

Paint flies across Wilson’s canvases like a collision, fragments of bodies, landscapes, and beasts locked in struggle. At times it is man against man, other times man against beast, or the lone figure set against the force of the crowd. These tensions form the heartbeat of his work, where violence, survival, and transformation intersect.
 
His process is driven by restless mark-making and saturated color, conjuring visions of apocalypse, hunting scenes, and primal conflicts. Wilson draws on this tension, allowing violence to become a generative force that fractures form, ruptures color, and shapes entire worlds within the canvas.

Hollis Taggart Downtown is pleased to present Material Memory, a group exhibition featuring new and recent paintings and sculptures by seven contemporary artists, Megan Baker, Edward Holland, Ashanté Kindle, Hans Neleman, Cordy Ryman, Kelly Wang, and Michael Wolf. Material Memory proposes that memory is not something we recall, but something that is physically constructed and embodied in surfaces, bodies, systems, and structures. Across painting, relief, sculpture and assemblage, the artists in the exhibition treat memory as an active process that is built through accumulation, altered through time, and sustained through material form. The works do not illustrate the past, they retain and remake it. Curated by Eleanor de Ropp Flatow, the exhibition celebrates the first anniversary of the Hollis Taggart Downtown, and underscores the gallery’s continued commitment to emerging and mid-career artists. It will be on view from May 15 through June 20, with an opening reception on Friday, May 15, from 6-8pm.
