The Hell or High Water director needed authentic chaos for his WWII bomb thriller, so he convinced authorities to close major streets around Monument for three weeks. Not just overnight shoots or clever angles. Full daylight evacuation sequences with hundreds of extras, real emergency vehicles, actual cordons.
Giles Nuttgens (his regular DP since Starred Up) shot handheld through the mayhem, no stabilisation, letting the camera shake with the panic. Amanda McArthur built a perfect 1940s bomb casing then buried it under tonnes of real construction debris. The actors genuinely couldn't see it until the reveal.
Mackenzie's genius move? He told half the extras it was a film about a gas leak, the other half about a terrorist threat. Their confused reactions when the bomb appears are completely genuine. Nobody knew what they were really running from until that moment.
