La máscara de Hannya es uno de los diseños más populares del tatuaje tradicional japonés.

Para mí esta máscara es una de las figuras más icónicas del arte Japonés, su carácter y expresión hablan por si solo. Supe que tatuarme la cara de un demonio podía ser algo controversial, pero hay mucho más que contar de esta misteriosa máscara.

_______Origen e historia:

La máscara Hannya apareció por primera vez en las obras de teatro “Noh” japonesas del siglo XIV, en estas obras de teatro se empleaban máscaras de madera para representar el temperamento o estado mental de los personajes. La máscara hannya tiene dos cuernos afilados saliendo de sus sienes y ojos saltones que observan con furia o tristeza debajo de una abultada frente.

Contrariamente a lo que pudiera parecer, en Japón la máscara Hannya es un símbolo de buena suerte, y como otros íconos terroríficos de la cultura japonesa, se cree que tiene el poder de ahuyentar a los espíritus malignos.

El nombre hannya (般若) es una palabra chino-japonesa para prajna o sabiduría. Una tradición dice que este nombre se le dio a esta máscara porque era el nombre de un monje artista Hannya-bo (般若坊) que se dice había logrado perfeccionar su creación. Una explicación alternativa es que el artista necesita una gran cantidad de sabiduría para crear esta máscara.

Este símbolo en el tatuaje japonés tiene un significado oculto muy popular. Se entiende que el Hannya representa como se puede transformar una persona por sus sentimientos más profundos, convirtiéndose en criaturas verdaderamente monstruosas –algo así como el demonio que todos llevamos dentro- Ese que no sale a la luz.
